Help with graphics....

Hello everyone... I am wanting to start making my own graphics for desktops and such but I need some programs to do it with... What programs do u all use to create your desktop backgrounds? All replies and appreciated....

Maya (if your rich

Microsoft Paint....

Nah, just kidding... Fireworks here.
I'll occasionally use Paint for a very quick edit but hardly ever.
