My only guess would be that a program is attempting to shut down and is having problems doing so. Not so much one you ran but maybe a program running in the background. One good way to see if this is the case is to go into the task manager under applications and see how many and which ones you have running while windows is on. If you end one and then try to shut down and it does it successfully then it is a good chance that it was that program.

I will admit though that this could be risky if you end a program that windows needs so just make sure you know what you are doing in there.

/ME takes no responsilbility in adverse actions as a direct result of the above recommendation in can't be held liable J/K

There are no other programs running in the background. Every program shuts down properly, but the pc does not go any further than the windows is shuttting down screen. I also went to the link and did the download update with no luck.

One thing I suggest with XP is PATIENCE. I was having an issue like that and at one point decided just to walk away in disgust. 20 minutes later the machine shut down, rebooted itself and ran fine ever since. XP is VERY self-healing if you let it. Most of my problems with it have been self-inflicted!

Wow you have great patience....I have that problem from time to time and if it takes it more then 2 minutes to shutdown I manually do it which isn't helping it any

Green Armani, I myself will do the same thing about 2 times and if things do not clear up I wipe the while thing out. I am slowly learning that it is better to try to figure out what the problem is but sometime wanting the problem to just go away takes over.
