Crashes when any change made to graphics screen (zooming / changing spot on map)

Good evening,
Issue.
Whenever I zoom in or out, or when the map shifts around to zoom in on a ship or planet it freezes. I can still hear music playing in the background, but game screen is frozen.
Background Specs
I am running windows 10, with a GTX 670 I5 4670 CPU
Up until recently (Windows 10, last patch) no issues with the game on this computer
Drivers are up to date
Looking at my task manager when I run the game it consumes over 6 Gb of memory (I have 16).
I am not by any stretch an expert but I am pretty sure the game should not consume 6 Gig of working memory. I also doubt its a memory card or graphics issue with my machine since its 1. a reasonably powerful one; 2. Worked fine before latest patches and Windows 10.
Thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated but at this point the game is completely unplayable
