I'm a GUI addict.

I constantly change my desktop using Windowblinds, WindowFX, Objectbar, DesktopX, Iconpackager, Object Dock, Hoverdesk, Nextstart, Rainlendar, YzToolbar and so on. Rarely do I leave a theme on my desktop more than two days. The longest was 7 days. Even then I was itchin' for a fix. A new theme fix! Now I'm thinking about going back to Litestep after 4 years free from the step.rc. I don't know what to do. HELP !!!!

Litestep! Nooo! Try out Blackbox first! it'll be, er, newer, for you!

Though - with as quickly as you bounce back and forth between stuff - it might be a little too minimalistic, too. ^_^

Litestep is more immersive...enough variation to keep you interested for yonks...

Immersive? Bah. I like my shell to simply load up, take up next to no ram, and then let me forget that it even exists. ^_~

LiteSTEP can do that...

*laughs* JCG - I've run LiteSTEP off and on since its release (more off than on, I admit.) I know it's a great, wonderful shell - but it just doesn't do it for me. So I seem to give Jafo (well, everyone, really.) as much (good natured,) trouble over it as I can. ^_^

I'm perfectly happy with blackbox - to me, that's shell perfection.

A computer is to be used to process information. It is a tool. Do a ss. Make a dbase. Start a novel. Use it for some useful purpose other than a pretty set of pixels. Forego any shells. Use what came with your computer. >

I do not use any of Stardocks products. I really don't like the way they operate on my system so I switched to StyleXP and I loke it. I get most of my skins from www.deskmod.com but most of my advice or if I have a problem comes from www.wincustomize.com.

kona0197....you don't see anything 'odd' about that arrangement?
You get your skins from Deskmod....your 'proggy' of choice is [for want of better word] a rival's, yet you bother to bend our ears for advice?

I'm starting to feel somewhat 'used'....

I'm a American (Try an stop us!) so what did you expect? JUST KIDDING! I have all the stardock programs on CD. I uninstalled them because I found them hard to use because I need to learn to use them. I get my skins here for my products that you have sjins for. I chat here so I can learn a thing or two about how I can create my own skins. You shouldn't consider Deskmod a rival but rather a brother. They help get artwork out to the masses also. Right now I am also using cusorXP and logon studio. So I don't hate you guys. I spend 85% of my time here anyways.

kona0197....let's get one thing clear from the start.
Deskmod is NOT the 'rival' to which I refer.
We have quite good relationships with all the other community skinning sites.
It is 'StyleXP' that is the problem....a hacked system dll to replace the original to enable comparatively simplistic skins to be applied by third parties....without the endorsement of Microsoft.
So what exactly is the problem? Their community [styleXP] not up to speed with 'real' solutions to your questions?
Do you need to ask people with 'actual' skinning experience?...

Well here is the problem. Before everyone pulled the Apple OS X skins from the site, I wanted my Windows machine to act, feel, and look like a mac since Apple dosen't make a Windows version of their popular OS. So I got the stardock progams from stardock and then the fun began. I downloaded a OS X theme from this site about a month or so ago. everything was fine until I found out that DX runs differently than objectbar. I wanted the bar on the bottom to emulate the exact look and feel of the dock bar on the mac so i unistalled DX and got mobydock. Now I have nothing. I even got BootXP so it would boot like a mac. And the skin for logonstudio skin MAC OS X. I don't know what went wrong I have no clue how to run this stuff so now I have regular Windows XP taskbar and ydock. Sorry I yelled at you. We americans suck sometimes. We have no manners at times as well.

And by the way why dosen't Microsoft sue styleXP?
They don't have to....all they need do is release another service pack and break the dll hack yet again....
Chances are they'll just make it hard-coded and impossible to 'patch'...

Also...don't lump all Americans into the 'bad manners' dept. I know very many who would be insulted by generalisations such as that...

why should they? in the end it makes their UI more attractive. if it would not be possible to play with the OS, quite a few people might loose interest in it ...

Jafo: your view on msstyles skinning is arrogant. it is definately not the program, but the skinners skills that make an UI look good. the average quality in msstyle skinning increases daily, and there is definately more "skinning experience" in doing shellstyles than in the WB community.

i just looked at the latest WB skins. plenty of them are ports from msstyles and most of the recent original WB skins are some kind of Photoshop filter fests.

OK I suck sometimes. I have bad manners. (Sorry my fellow Americans) I guess instead of this skinning crap, I will just leave all of it alone and go back to what I do best: fixing mountain bikes. bicycles rule.

moshi...my view on msstyles skinning is that it is as 'sophisticatedly diverse' as it can be under the circumstances/limitations of the proggy/application process.

The artistry may be good/bad/indifferent...but the functionality is what is found wanting.

I have little interest in defending/supporting a hacked dll as a concept/process...where it's intention is to break a Company's legal protection of its product.
'Reverse engineering', it's called..

You just like Microsoft and Stardock Jafo that's all there is to it. I did not have to mess with any DLL's to make StyleXP to run on my XP/SP1a system. Oh well no hard feelings each to his own. I agree with moshi's statement for the record.

you´ll hardly find a UI related dll on my computer that is not hacked. especially with icons the possibilities go far further than any shareware/freeware program (and as you are using LiteStep you should know that is not possible to change all icons with a program in 2K or XP when not using exploder as shell).

it might be illegal as we only bought a license to use the product and not the actual product itself (maybe it´s even illegal to alter the registry to run an alternative shell ... who knows ... i have never read the whole license agreement).

but hey, in the end you can only stick to your own morals and not to that others tell you. i have seen quite many posts of you where you admitted doing illegal things (not computer related) and i still don´t see you as a criminal

You who? I like hacking or cracking stuff but not my Windows. Paid good money for this setup.
