depends on what your looking for in one. A Shell replacement ( Litestep ) or a configurable Windows OS Desktop enhancment product...

DexktopX
Hoverdesk
NextStart

smoung others.. DTX is pretty much the flavor of choice here mostly I think because of it's intergration into the full blown GUI suite ObjectDesktop which has everything, IconPacker for controling all Icons on your system, CursrXP which does the same with cursors with added affects and such, DexkTopX and a scripting set that allows you to extent it's functionality, WindowsFX which allows you to have fly in windows and such, ObjectBar which lets you create your Own taskbar, and other menu bars are you desire, and then WindowBlinds the mother of them all, which lets you take the Windows GUI and paint it and almost every progam on the market which plays nice with the graphics engine, to look and feel anyway you like...

neat huh?

The one which you feel most at ease in using and gives you what you want.

feelings are perception and that is a personal thing really.

you wanting to start making themes?

if so you plan on just sticking with themes?

if yes to question one and no to question two, then DesktopX without a second thought. Because of the whole package as you eveloe in your abilities and desires to expand you art, product, etc it ODNet, leaves your with more open options.

Also DesktopX alone if you plan on creating themes and also would like to program functions of your own to go with them.

If not DeskTopX, then Hoverdesk which is a very solid, fast application and supported very well also, there are many who could/can help you with the learning curve...

those were my thoughts when I went with StarDocks products, I actually bought Four different companies products...
and ODnet was the best by far...

anyway, some of the people actually doing this skinning and themes and such will respond soon I am sure, I am still at the crawling stage as far as skinning and thees go...

good luck

Iplural wheras I dont want to get into a .... on which set of desktop improvement software which one should use I do think it is important for the individual to look at the list and make his own discission.

You appear to be only promoting one set. It may be good but I consider that one should present a non-Biased list.

know what... hell with it...

Sorry I responded Pandabean didn't mean to douse you in biased opinion when you has asked for exactly that... My mistake was pointing out WHY I held the opinion, and in fact, reminded that it is a personal choice...

... color me gone, I m done with this...

Nothing personal I can assure you.

I just believe it is right and proper to lay the country- side out in its entirety and go from there.

You should know that I uactually use a variety of the Stardock programs because after tial and error of a considerable number of those available they suit what I wish to achive.

I should know you own what? Great! power to you...

I own Aston, WinStep Full, Hoverdesk and ODnet, and plan on working with all of them, Biased?

I am just starting out with this myself and also pointed that fact out, and I also pointed the fact out that there were others here who would be able to get down into the products...

no... I need to end this.. heading the wrong direction and frankly it and you at this point are not worth being a trigger.................

I purchases each of those because I feel that I should own them if I am going to do any theming or skeining in them.. Also because each of the people producing those products are a deeply solid part of the foundation of WIndows modification and they really are not in it to get rich...

Want to get the lay of the country out, you read the thread in the light you wished to see it and applied your inferences upon me. Which is an easy thing to do online because you do not have the person in the same room with you so you see the body language, facial expression, tone of voice or inflection...

I can understand it, and almost accept it, but I refuse to own it...

hey, you can help pandabean as well if not more so than I can...

have a good one..

sorry to seem, sound, read, be snipe about this.. but I've been up over 24 hours now and all I was doing was attempting to helpwith some information.. biased as it may seem... I'll refrain from it further....

If you are trying to build a functional and perhaps assetically coordinated desktop my personal belief is that there is no greater start than to use Window Blinds. There are numorous skins avaialable to enable reams of different moods.

After that there are a nuber of choices, all of which have skins available, a large number matching the skins of window blinds.

A few include DesktopX, Hovertdesk, Litestep and Winstep.

You can also improve the look and feel of the mose with a program such as CursorX, a number of matching skins also available.

This only scratches the surface as ther are many more programs available to assist.

Iplural, have always read your many notes with great interest.

Can only assure the best.

I do however believe a forum should be a place for people to express what ever they believe in the correct manor TO ACHIEVE THE BEST FOR ALL

Well im back to the windows shell now and all im really wanting to change is the start bar at the bottom. So what program do u reccomend for that?

pandabean...while the other two are duking it out as to whose opinion is more liberal than whose, just stick with LiteSTEP a bit longer till you actually get the hang of it without crashing, etc....then be sure to at least add Windowblinds for a full immersive feel.
Try Hoverdesk as well as it gives quite a different 'feel'....buy the full Object Desktop for the Windowblinds and you'll be able to check out all the other Stardock goodies at your leisure...[there are many].

Each alternative is excellent in their individual ways...and all superior to the default Windows GUI...

I'am glad that IPLural and the Chinaman have shook hands and everything is fine. I happened to agree with the both of your statements. I would have told you what I used and why but also would have said that you need to find what is best for you.
