OK...if it's XP then there are registry settings to fix.
If you had an installer for Litestep you would have been able to uninstall it again, rather than just deleting the directory.
It is NOT a simple proggy....it is your SHELL, replacing explorer.exe in your system.
Whoever said 'just delete the folder' should be shot.
I hate idiot advice...

Is/was the Litestep being used in the XP or the other OS?

These are the settings for Removal and reestablishing explorer as shell in Win2000 which 'should' be the same as XP...or close enough. [I've never had to 'uninstall']...

Uninstalling LiteStep from Windows 2000
The most common problem that happens during a LiteStep uninstall on a Windows 2000 machine is that most of the time users don't have administrative privileges on their. However, if you do have administrative rights on your machine you will need to modify a few registry entries to get LiteStep uninstalled. So lets fire up regedit and get started on making your LiteStep headache go away.

First find the key:

HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\system.ini\boot>SYS:Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

and change this to USR:Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon>Shell

and change the value of Shell to c:\winnt\explorer.exe to put Explorer back in as your shell.

HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows>BrowseNewProcess - Make sure that this DWORD is set to "no" so that explorer loads properly. This key effected LiteStep if you were using Internet Explorer 4 and up, if you have an earlier version of Internet Explorer, use a STRING named DesktopProcess, with a value of "0" instead of the DWORD. Basically you need this set to no if you want to have explorer setting itself as shell everytime you access it.

An alternate is to install a shell selector such as ShellON, and set it up to load explorer.exe for you....[it alters the reg settings itself].

Or...

Add another Litestep shell and folder...in other words, put it back.

Some of my LS themes on this site are 'full shells' which if installed will give you everything you need...you just unzip with paths so that the litestep.exe is in c:\litestep.

And reboot...

https://www.wincustomize.com/download.asp?SkinID=17&LibID=6

That'll be a full shell and not just a theme...

To get to explorer [the file manager] press ctrl/shift/esc and start a new task and browse to c:\windows\explorer.exe...and you'll be able to manage files, etc...

Get yourself ShellON....install it, run it and set it as your 'shell', then configure explorer as your default and LiteSTEP as an alternative.
Then, when you boot, you will be given a choice of which 'shell' to use.
If it then crashes or is 'messed up' you can get back into the alternative one by killing the one you are in...

Hey Jafo, I haven't used Litestep since I ran Win98 about 4 years ago. Has it changed much? Is it still only configured with step.rc? And is that shellOn a must for WinXP, which I run now. Because I remember booting to DOS when I would screw up Litestep so I could change the system.ini I don't think we can boot to DOS with XP?

Thanks In Advance.

All i could do was:

HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon>Shell

and change the value of Shell to c:\winnt\explorer.exe to put Explorer back in as your shell

I tried doing the others and i couldnt find the last part and the first part was already set to what is said.
