Flash Mind Reader...

This is really cute. Follow the instructions and be amazed...

I expect the crowd here will figure this one out pretty quick but it stumped and dazzled a late-night talk show host. He's still wondering if it's some kind of psychic computer script. I figured it out as I was trying it a second time so the effect was ruined but it's still a lot of fun to watch people encounter it.

This same thing was in a Donald Duck comic book called "Fun with Mathematics" in the 1950s.

If you figure it out, don't post the solution here right away, let's let people be amazed for awhile...

Very interesting link David!

We have tryied, we were 4 persons and the "Mind Reader" has 4 successful results!!!
We are amazed, what about the solution???
Yes, we found out last time this was posted that Jafo couldn't count right. Hehehe!
Or at least didn't know how to RTFM.

Adni: Very easy, think about it.
And look at the chart very carefully.

Or just go the this thread from last week. Somebody spoiled it all.

There are so many multiples of 9 paxx, how come this Mind Reader guesses always the correct symbol? I have done it 10 times and I have always the correct answer.

To multiple a number, you must know and have this number and this thing doesn't know it!!!

Still don't get it and I was very good in Mathematics!!!

Adni, come one. Look at the chart.
Well, David didn't want me to spoil it, but I will.

So:

DISCLAIMER: I WILL SPOIL THE TRICK

Adni, ANY two digits number, when you add both digits together and substract the total from the original number will ALWAYS give you a multiple of 9. You know what a multiple of 9 is, right? It's a number that is divisible by 9, such as 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90, etc. Try it, you'll see:
76? 76-(7+6)=63 (multiple of 9)
92? 92-(9+2)=81 (multiple of 9)
12? 12-(1+2)=9 (multiple of 9)
30? 30-(3+0)=27 (multiple of 9)
99? 99-(9+9)=81 (multiple of 9)
Try any number you want. It will always be a number divisable by 9.

Now look at the chart. All the multiples of 9 have the same symbol: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81.

Tadam!

And it switches the symbols on the numbers round each time. So all the multiples of 9 will be bells, then next time they will all be snowflakes, etc, so as not to make a pattern appear.

Which, in a related way, leads me to a question.

Anyone know how the other 'mind reader' trick works, the one where there's some playing cards, and you have to think of one, then you click the button and it tells which one you were thinking of?
Yes, I know how it's done, Hippy. Are you asking for the answer?
Cause it's even easier if you have a good sense of observation.
This one, Hippy? http://www.webshots.com/sp/card_trick/
Reply #19 Top
Yes, GM, except the one I saw originally had only cards with Js, Qs and Ks, which makes it even harder to spot that all the original cards are gone and replaced by similar ones.
Didn't need to RTFM on that one....was a tad too simple...

Thanks paxx,
I understand it now, the trick was the changing of symbols in the table Cool!
