window me to window xp pro best way to do it

I have updated Every windows using the update they have as an option and didn't loose any data.

I did find it is best if you reformat and do a clean install. Maybe a project for the future.

hey, I don't know about upgrading, but the way I install a new windows is just install it from doss. Loosing all your data is a problem, but maby you can store it somewhere else.
(however the best way to install WINDOW$ is not )

I am a computer tecnician but I don't know it all... anyways, I have never had a problem with losing data when using the upgrade option with Windows XP. Nice thing about XP is if you don't like it, you can uninstall it to restore ME in the control panel. Make sure all your programs work with XP or it's all for naught. I agree that the best way is a clean install. Saves time.

thank you all i would like to do a clean install maybe get my cd/rw fix and back my programs up and do a total format then install XP pro

If you need a burner, depending on your location you can usually pick up a new one for about $40 to $60 dollars. Staples is cheap, frys is better. most of the time it costs more to fix the drive than it does to buy a new one.

If you have the room on your current disk, make a new partition on your drive and copy all your files to the new partition. Then you can format the old partition during a clean xp install.
