Wallpaper - .jpeg or .bmp?

On my old OS Windows 98se I could only download my wallpapers as .bmp as I didn't use active desktop and to use .jpeg wallpapers I had to have active desktop activated.
I have now changed to Windows XP Pro, how do I stand in the wallpapers department, can I use .bmp or .jpeg now and if so which is the best format, or am I still limited.

XP will use either of those formats. Go ahead and use any image you want in those formats.

well, bmp is higher quality, but a larger file size. However, a .jpg file saved with low compression is very close in quality to a bmp. well, I find it hard to notice the difference in quality sometimes. People use .jpgs here to keep the file size down for those with slow connections, making it easier to download.

bmps seem to load quicker, but jpg are smaller (usually), depends what you want, fast or small.

Incidentally, I use jpgs in my zip files for my wallpapers IF I am offering more than one resolution, as putting 4 or 5 bmp's in a zip file still tends to get too big for comfortable download. If I am offering just the one resolution, I will use the .bmp file for the quality it offers. if you look through my walls, you will notice I say whether there is a bitmap in the zip file or not. I hope this helps....

Mrs Blondie66, I'm not sure if this will answer your question or not, but when I purchased the PixOS suite from Pixtudio, it replaced my desktop properties menu with one of there own and now when I right click on desktop, properties, desktop, it now reads both .jpg and .bmp files. Actually very handy.

HuronJoe: I think you are talking about DesktopX. If you installed the suite, then DX is probably ruuning too. Did you realise this?

Actually, WinXP simply converts whatever background format you choose into a bmp and stores it temporarily in:

C:\Documents and Setting\(user name)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Wallpaper1.bmp
