My new Desktop Quick Search

I know most of you are leery of downloading programs from people unless you really know them well but I was wondering if you all would want to try out my quick search program and see if it is useful or not if so I will finish it up add a few more things that I have planed for it like a goggle search button maybe even a mp3/wave/CD player tab to it. Unzip it on your desktop open the folder and then click on Desktop Quick Search.EXE Let me know what you think and I’ll load it up with stuff if you all like it with a way to somewhat skin it by changing the picture files.

checking it out now

I think what happened was the "percent symbols" were stripped?

When I click the link it ended at : http://www.dreamdesign3d.com/ftp/Desktop <-
all I had to do was add the (-whites pace-"Quick"-white space-"Search.Zip")
and it worked fine for download...

use an under-score in your naming convention which should make it so that doesn't happen with posted links?

Thanks now if I can get the other 2 million people here to try it out and see if they like it if so then would make an icon for it and add all the other stuff that I was going to add to it. I will also make it more able to be skined as of now it does not allow for much diversity. I will make a map with the sizes so you know exactly were to put them. I also need to figure out what most people would like the files to be : GIF,JPEG,or BMP

This will probably not make it over there in the library like SysMetrix did but I’m hoping it will get a good response. If it does then I will finish and try out a few other things I’m working on like a log on screen for windows 98/Me that have a few other options that XP doesn’t have and a few other programs.

well that was nuts I didnt type my nick in like that and not sure why the font is red???? I typed windows 98 and windows Me
Reply #11 Top
if you type / and "me" together it does that. like this... /me types / and me together to turn the text red and insert his nickname.

in time, if you set it up so it loaded the useable search enginers from a txt based file, people could then personalize it and probably be more apt to use it.

just a thought, there are a bunch of different meta serach engines, some specialized others not, and they might also be able to pass their logon information with the url in a fassion that allows them to search, say their own gallery on the fly for new comments and such?

well, I didn't really look yet to see how you have it. But if the search engine urls are hard coded into it, that limits the ability to configure it for a persons personality as far as like and dislikes in what search engines they make use of.

I use dogpile and metacrawler for the most part, if the list of search engines are pulled in from a text based file then a person could edit it so they could add or remove the urls to the search engines they like to use most.

you could limit the number allowed but the number of args(urls) the app would load so it wouldn't grow to large..

ahh good idea thank you I'll see if I can do that. I wish I could get more people to look at it to see if it is worth the time to make a full version.

personally think it would/could be a great addition to making skins and themes eventually as a plugin so you could add it to the task bar, objectbars, desktopx etc and integrate it into things by choice

haven't looked so not sure if anyone has done anything like that yet, but even so, there are never too many choices of tools to do a job

Pretender....sorry to hear about your lousy childhood in another thread

I took a look at your app and my suggestions are along the same lines as IP's

1. Providing a dynamic/configurable coice of search engines would be nice.
a. A small configuration screen/panel would enable users to either select their choices from a pre-existing list of search engines, or entering their own preferred URL's (as well as icons).
b. This could, of course be flat file based.
2. Provide a sort of status bar so that a user does not have to know the search engine logo (or wait for the tooltips). This would update on the logo mouse-over.
3. Incorporate skinning of the utility.
4. Possibly launch the search using a 'custom' (browser control) window. This would allow a user to personalize the search window as well as the main one.
5. Or, process the search in the background and display only the results.
a. This would obviously require some thought as results from various search engines are of varying formats.
b. This would also affect the ability of a user to configure their preferred search engine.

That's all I have for the time being. Keep up the good work!

Excellent now this is what I’m talking about a full detailed description of what you all would like to see on it. The only thing I’m not sure how to do is make it so you can use it for your personal browser. I can how ever make a browser but it still runs of internet explorer. I think I covered the status bar thing you were talking about.

Sorry, the 'personal browser' meant creating a form/window and put a web control in it. You can then parse the returned HTML (possibly creating a custom HTML page), save it to disk and navigate the web browser to it. Does that make sense?
