Litestep

I installed Litestep yesterday and it wouldn't let me shut down, log off, change users or restart.

I was able to get to the control panel through IE and remove it which allowed me to change users only.

Is this normal because I would like to give it another try?

No....not normal...but anything can happen when playing with shells...

You'll need to provide a little more info for anyone to be able to assist you...

Try this URL for instructions:

If you don't understand it fully, don't use Litestep, it's not that simple!

Wow gef, that's just a bit outdated with the installer now, isn't it? ^.^

Speak of the devil...

Just saw this on shellfront.org - the whole thing seems to be pretty decent, too.

I have a suggestion... if your using XP create a new user with admin rights and install litestep as the default shell for that new user.
Now when you boot you would have a choice of your regular log in with Explorer as your shell.
Or a litestep log in.
/me has been using this method for months without issue.

I just stick to Carapace (which works wonderfully for me now that I've reinstalled Windows,) but that might be a bit much for somebody totally new to shell alternatives!

(even though it's simple, slick, and easy as pie to set up.)

Still has a small bug when you select explorer though... (and graphically it isn't happy with the XP style logon screen )

Static: That is a brilliant idea!! I may even put Litestep back on my system and make some more themes for it. I haven't used Litestep in ages, kinda got caught up in DX.

Litestep installed just fine at first. I have 2 users on my PC with admin and only set it for one.
The trouble started when I tried to change a theme. Nothing happened and I lost everything on the desktop. I had to hit the reset button to get anything back. Flashback to the WIn98 days.

When I got everything back I set tablaunchpad to be visible all the time and that saved me from the reset.

I was able to change the theme through the Litestep configuration which I got to by using IE to navigate to the folder. \ nothing on the theme buttons would work. The menus showed but no functions.

I tried three themes. Elegence, Saphandra, and le. They all acted the same. BTW does every theme have winamp? I like winamp but the new version takes forever to load.

I noticed that Litestep was using 36MB of memory to run. Is this accurate?

You shouldn't ever get much over 11 or 12 meg...but if your shell goes bung you can expect quite a lot more, as well as CPU use around 90 to 100 %.
I've had to 'kill' LS when it's got to 350meg plus and counting, due to me mucking up some coding...but a 'proper' theme will be a lot better than Exploder.

Chances are you are using OTS-compliant theme changing and not LSCP.exe but LSTS to select them and having a problem with the *.thm file...a common bug that's easy to overcome.
just make sure the reference to 'step.rc' in the *.thm file reads 'step.rc' [without quotes] and has no other letters to its name, like 'rstep.rc'.
And use LSCP.exe to change themes...
