and you should probably go to the local book store, one that handles a good selection of computer books in the graphics area.
Look through the books after you have looked some software over, trial versions, what have you and see which seems to fit best with your learning processes, so the curve doesn't slip over and drown you... dang I hate that when it happens...
mmm, just a fyi, walls are put through a process of acceptance which is very selective, almost to the point of being exclusive because of a few different factors, and none of it revolves around favoritism in the least.

many people submit lots and lots of screens before the first one is accepted, and it might take just as many if not more for the next to be selected, as you skills expand and grow and are presented in your style and quality, originality of your work, you get more and more accepted. It isn't done on a personal level and does not indicate any failing really, more of, almost like a like at an art school, when they have a showing. Each person presents what they have done to see if their work is selected to be shown and not everyones can or will be accepted, but that should not be seen as a negative as much as boost to get deeper into your art.
