XP

Would you buy XP inorder to use WindowBlinds? I have XP but still voted for #2 because a lot of people don't have a couple hundred to get XP.

why not surprise all of us at the same time? I vouch for later

Frogboy, Thats from the few that answered the poll. Out of a 1/2 million people registered on this site that was a very small percentage. But to answer your question, sure bring out the XP version now and the rest later.

Frogboy: Where do those stats come from? How are OD users OS's ID'd?

I know about the user agent which websites can pick up via the browser. (And the user agent can be faked for those who like that sort of thing.) So I'm wondering what mechanism is used by SD to determine the OS of an OD user. Is it the user agent or am I missing something else?

WB4 I believe has already been announced to include support for W9x/2k. (Which surprised me given SD's previously expressed negativity regarding continued support of the previous OS's.) So if the plans are changing, why not just say so?

Oh if the stats are based on the poll as WOM suggests, how is it determined that those answering the poll are actual OD users? WC users don't necessarily translate to OD users or even registered stardock app users.

So does this site track users and not only ID's who answered the poll (and what their vote was?) but also correlates that to an SD registration? WC users to SD users and thus individually keeping track of users' activities here and poll votes? Just wondering.

sig: Don't know if the have something built in to detect what OS people are using. I know they can tell what WindowBlind is being used. Those stats were from the poll if I remember correctly.

ooooh, they can tell what windowblind I use? Next it'll be what I et for breakfast! Oh the humanity!

WOM, I know for web based stuff, the browser gives up the user agent which provides the OS, browser used, and sometimes the ISP is coded there too. That can be changed by a minor registry hack for those who don't want to give out that info. But then some websites won't work with goofy user agents that some people come up with.

Anyway, I was just wondering where the stats came from and how they were gathered.

It's the old "agree to disagree" scenario, WOM.

My best advice for Frogboy is to flip a coin.

Flip a coin as long as both sides say
"Release ASAP".

No I don't think he will flip a coin. He will look at the pro's and con's (money)and (people) and decide whats best for Stardock.

"Or would they prefer a WB4 release for XP to be in say March and then Win9X show up in Fall of this year?"

Probably. I use Win2K at work since XP is not our corporately supported OS. I think the current version of WB skins almost every conceivable control in Win2K, so that wouldn't bother me if there was a delay for Win2000. The stuff like skincast doesn't really interest me too much.

The poll makes it sound like WB would be an XP only product - as if it wouldn't run under 2000. That would be a bad idea, to abandon those users.

Guess you would have to be really clear on the pages where people would be reading about WB4 and there being a second release because of having to actually put the ( engine?) for lack of better understanding API's and such...

Though some might have to have it tattooed on their forhead before they grapsed it once the jones-ing started for it...

just my pov for what it's worth...

Frogboy, come on you aren't going to make us wait until fall right? You are just pulling all our legs.

I think following the MS example on OS support is more than reasonable. I mean come on these are their products, and even they aren't too worried.

the way I see it is this brad, if you put out xp4 sooner will gain a better market, and probably keep more customers away from stylexp with the improvements in wb4... then you can always add the features later for Win 98 & win Me... because that is still part of your market... you have to make them happy but if you wait to release the final wb4 people might become impatient... and then we get websites like Stardocksucks.com and stuff like that... jk ...if anyone did such a thing... I would go mental.... but people would get impatient... and try to find something that they dont have to wait for... even if all they find is an inferior product... they will buy it...and never know any better...

as I was saying guys... I think a march release would be perfect... from a standpoint that stardock should do what they can now... to make money... because when longhorn comes out they are going to have a whole bunch of new things to skin and that point win 98 users will be even less...

I've got Alpha 3.90d. It works for me.

Win 98 users will be even less.... what?

even less of them.. that's what I mean.... but not that windows shouldn't get windowblinds... they'ed have to wait till september anyways for the new features... but why hold back the xp users... it doesn't make sense... the new features will attract new customers... that's the way I see it
