, you sound like a newbie.  Are you?  That would explain a lot.  For the moment, I'll assume you are.

The key to getting new ship-types is Research.  The first step is to research the parts that you want your future ship to have (i.e., drives, weapons, defenses, range, support modules, etc.)

Once your race understands the parts, there are two ways to get the ships you want; the simplest way is that they will just appear on your shipyard availability list immediately after you have researched all of the necessary parts.

The second way is to go into the Designer and design your own ship.  The Designer is pretty easy to use, and can be very very effective, the more so as you gain experience and learn what you need & want.

Very useful for me is the following website that allows you to compare the various ship-parts so that you can design exactly the kind of ship you want.

Hope this helps.  Post again if you have more questions.  There are lots of people on this site who will be glad to help.

As an addendum to the above, ship 'types' are unlocked in the Engineering tree based on Hull size. You start with tiny hulls and NO weapons. So you are not able to get warships untill you research weapons and if you care to defenses.

the next size from what you start with is 'small'. If you research weapons as well that ship will be a 'cutter' which is a laser based small ship. If you also researched defenses that cuttter will be 6 damage, and 4 'laser' defense and will move about 4 hexes.

The next size up is Medium and is our first entry into 'Capital' sized ships.

Ship designs vary greatly based on the types of tech you have researched and unlocked. With Medium Hulls and 'Survey' both you unlock and can build your own survey ships. Also you may want to research engines.

You start with Hyperdrive which lets you move 3 or 4 (dont remember), your next tier is Ion engines which let you move 5 and then Warp drives.

All of these 'research' types unlock ship components in the game. You can use the default ships which the game will make for you or you can design your own ships which is ALWAYS more efficient with space.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!

It seems necessary in the game that i play now... i must build a self designed ship
Hull size is main component for shipsize, ok.
Engineering and weapon branch for ships.
