Fun with RAID... Tip/help needed

I have an Asus P4B533-E with a Promise MB FastTrak133 Lite RAID-Controller on Board. As I need a 5th IDE port I thought I can connect a HD to it and use it as an UltraDMA133 controller. The controller itseld detects the HD and after configuring it via the controller everything was fine. I used driver version .21, the HD was detected by XP. But I experienced bad timeouts with that configuration (mouse hung for 2 seconds, HD was not accessible for some seconds and the event log reported errors, too...) After dealing with drivers after .21 I had the problem that XP didn't list the drive anymore. Did anyone experience similar problems and got a solution ?

Usually a number of drives in RAID configuration will only be seen as one drive. Were you expecting XP to list more than one? Two 80Gb drives in RAID 1 will be seen as one drive of 80Gb. Three 80Gb drives in RAID 5 will be seen as one drive of 160Gb. How many drives are you using? I'm not familiar with your board and controller so I haven't got much to offer on them. The controller should list drives seperately. If it does and the new drive doesn't show, it may just need re mounting, or possibly the hardware configuration is not supported. The first scenario you describe is almost certainly a mis-configuration within the controller.

Sorry can't be more help. I'm not so good at remote support, I'm more 'hands on'. You really need someone who's used that board and controller.

But then, at the same time, Fuzzy- most RAID controllers (such as the Promise controller on my Soyo,) will allow you to use the RAID channels as seperate and distinct IDE channels, instead of using them to set up a RAID array.

Personally, I can't see why anybody would need an IDE /5/ - but I agree with Fuzzy - it's a hard to diagnose/support thing online like this. ^_^

2 HD's, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 Burner... So where to put an additional HD ? So I wanted to use the RAID-controller as a seperate IDE-controller with 1 HD.
