There won't be a new server in a couple of days. What we have to do is analyse where we can save on SQL queries.

A site like this has 3 resources constantly at battle:

Bandwidth, Scripts, Database.

The first two are fine. The third is maximized. The result is that the site becomes extremely slow for everyone. That becomes pretty unfair to people who have paid money for subscriptions and bought software.

HOpefully by the end of the day on Monday (or Tuesday) we can find some ways to speed up the SQL.

Ultimately, it will need a new server but that won't happen right away.

I'm tempted to register but how will I know that if I pay for the subscription this site won't goout of business in a week? I've seen that happen way too often! Will this site even be arround for two years?

Since this site's establishment it would be quite safe to say it has the best reputation for consistently being 'on-line' than any other Skinning site in History.
Name me just ONE site which has been 'up' reliably longer than Wincustomize.com...
The first [Customize.org] is in its second 'coming'.
The [arguably] most historically significant site [Skinz.org] is also in its second 'life'.
Both had quite lengthy down-times between 'versions'.
Same goes for Deskmod.
The 'smaller' sites....LOS is now ArtUproar.
Skinbase shuffles off the mortal coil now and then.
DeviantART has had rough times when it's unavailable.
And I won't even MENTION what happens in the LiteSTEP world....

Only problem is that things change all the time when the page is reloaded. Like new things added, etc.

Justin Smith, this site is not going anywhere. And, there has been absolutely no discussion on making it a "subscription only" site. Trust me on this one- I'm a site admin *and* have worked at Stardock for 7 1/2 years. Obviously, Stardock isn't going anywhere!

I understand the maintenence but this really bites.. I come on here every morning (with fingers crossed) hoping that the libraries are back up and still free. I mean is it REALLY necessary to shut down libraries for NON-SUBSCRIBERS to FIND a way to expand that database? Not trying to start an argument or anything...just curious...

Subscribers have paid to help the site run, why should their access suffer so 'freebie' non-contributors can get on? While ever the database is packed the site will be slow. Better to take part of it down so maintenance can be done, if that means a little inconvenience for non-contributors then so be it. The result should be worth the wait.

Remember, the more people subscribe, the more money the site has, the more kit it can buy, the easier access will be. So it's up to all of you non payers to dip hands in pockets
