I'm worried that ships can't defend planets. You can still orbit a planet even though there is no starport right.
It would be a bug if now you can't defend a planet, because there is no shipyard to defend your planet.
I have been able to send ships into orbit of planets, and I have attacked planets with ships in orbit. I have not yet had a ship or fleet attack one of my planets that had ships orbiting it. The planets with ships in orbit that I have attacked have defended themselves. From this I would conclude that ships in orbit of your own planets should be able to defend your planets. If they fail to do so, please open a ticket.
The next release is supposed to actually show the ship(s) orbiting the planets and/or the shipyard
