can't select/open files in fences...

I bought Fences a couple months ago specifically to keep my desktop icons organized on my Surface Pro tablet.  It is running Windows 8.1, and I am have the issue that others have posted about where my desktop appears empty at startup and I have to right-click to show my fences.  This was a minor annoyance, but I liked Fences so much I also installed it on my desktop at home - which I may add, runs flawlessly on Windows 7.

Today I went to double-click on a file inside a fence to open it, and when I tried to do so it just hid my fences. So, I tried clicking in a different area of the icon, I tried tabbing onto a free icon on my desktop and arrow-ing over to the file I needed, disabling quick-hide... nothing works.  I now cannot open any of my files inside fences unless I disable them.

This is very disappointing.
