It doesn't extend the total amount of daylight in a given day but it does extend or 'save' light from early in the morning when we typical folk are sleeping and adds it to the end of the day when the same folk are still awake.

Confuses the cows at milking time, though...

They do it here so that the children aren't standing in the dark waiting for the school bus.
At least that's how it was explained to me.

Actually, winter time is the original clock, summer time ("daylight saving") is when they add one hour, so you have more light during the summer and thus "save" on energy. Remember, this thing was born during the energy crises of the seventies or so (long before my times).

Then again, I could be completely wrong.
