The money could be better spent, medical services, hospitals, unemployment and that sort of 'frivolous' thing.
I would have thought 10 floors high and 100 below ground level would more practical ....
These are all just a bit 'Las Vegas' IMNSHO.

wombat.. it's really hard to get a return on your investment by throwing money at unemployment, and I'm sure NYC has plenty of hospitals. Better to 'employ' people by building, maintaining, and staffing the WTC, don't you think?

Kosati, I know what you mean, but I was thinking more on a national level.
My own experience of the Medical System in the US (San Diego in fact) was an eye-opener, nice people, well trained, all those things, but not enough of them.
And of course, if you survive the reason you ended up in hospital the bill will put you into Cardiac Arrest!

well, as a honorable citizen of WinCustomize and New York, I have to say that we definitely need something to stand out...and it seems these days the more outrageous it is, the more success it has...I don't necessarily agree with it...for example, if you look at all the ideas submitted for the Trade Center site in the link provided by joetheblow (thanks Joe ) you will notice one design looks like a Tic-Tac-Toe. Well, the designer is Simmons Hall and he’s last design was a student dorm at M.I.T (see this link: http://web.mit.edu/evolving/projects/index.html ) you can definitely see the resemblance. That’s fine for a school, but not for lower Manhattan. We need something more serious looking.

I think the best looking building in the city is the Chrysler Building (Excuse me if the name is not correct), a great piece of Art Deco but pretty well timeless.
Calatis, I'm relieved you said it, I really detest all of the proposals, and I think (me, myself) the bigger and shinier the bauble the more trouble it could attract.

yes, you are completely right...the stranger it looks, the more trouble it will draw; and I just hope they'll find that timeless design like the Chrysler Building...the design of the next building is so important that the entire world is curious as to what it will look like, so I'm sure the architects will try to be bold...

I'm not quite sure what I'd like the buildings to look like, though I would like them to have the same style facade as the twin towers.

I definitely think the actual footprints should be reflecting pools, beside the pools on one corner should be a park, and on the other corner should be a museum.

I'm on the outside looking in... ( I am Canadian ) I do not believe NY needs something to "stand out" NY stands out! However my resolve is: The US and NY need to rebuild no matter what, they have too show the world and more specifically the creatures of terror that the US and symbolically the free thinking world will not, do not and never will allow such cowardly acts to prevail! Now with that out of my system... I would like to see NY with the tallest buildings in the world again. Its only fitting. Look out Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They are currently the tallest. They out rank the Sears Tower in Chicago by only 33 feet.

So the design by Peterson/Littenberg Architecture and Urban Design does not appeal to anyone? I thought that design was the tamest and the most ok looking.

Then again, I am a wild child at heart. I tend to want things funky. I would never settle for a less fabulous biulding because it would be a target. That area will always be a target I suppose, whether a biulding was biult there or not.

I can't see the tallest biulding being there, but I don't see any way they can make it small. It would end up being 70 floors due to the lack of space downtown Manhatten.

I like SOM idea (not because I have a friend working there)

I think the WTC should be rebuilt exactly as they were. (Only stronger). America arising from the ash and despair, stronger than ever.
