xpthemes

what exactly is xpthemes.net and how is it affiliated with stardock and wincustomize? i was under the impression that when i submitted my work to wincustomize that it was solely available on wincustomize and not some other archaic websites that are run by stardock, which they would rather not announce to the community.

did anyone else know that their work is up on xpthemes.net or am i the only clueless one here? >

jark...as I recall it is just an alternate front-end to the same database intended to be more user-friendly for those users new to the 'scene'...

i understand that however there is no mention anywhere on wincustomize that says that submissions here are also available at xpthemes.net. furthermore, xpthemes.net makes no mention of an affiliation with stardock.

this, i do not like.

I didn't know about the other site until I think someone mentioned it here just a few weeks ago.

I noticed it before - never thought it was a big deal. Same database, different look.

It's actually www.xpthemes.com.

same database: yes
different look: yes
completely different domain: yes

it is the latter that upsets me, considering that there has been no notification of such when submitting here on wincustomize.

Can they comment on whatever they download and does the download counter get added to while accessing thru XPTHEMES?

Hmm I just seen my set of cursors there too though I never seen that site before until right now...
well that could upset a few ppl not knowing the facts and coming across that accidently?
but I could care less (whatever I upload I expect no surprises)

I have known about it for ages... but never really thought too much of it to be honest.

It's just an alternative front-end to the wincustomize database, but stripped down a little and geared up more towards 'XP' and bringing in new users... and traffic I would imagine.

Although I do agree with Jark that it should really have a mention somewhere in the submission policy, just so people are made aware of it’s existence, and that their work is being featured in on an alternate 'mirror' site as well.

I mean whatever I upload wherever it ends up does not surprise me. hehe

but jark yes I agree, that could upset ppl and should be explained on the upload page over "here"

hell dragon just said exactly what it is that bothers me about xpthemes.

i dont have much problem really with it, even though it is kinda wrong they dont give stardock credit, but it hooks into the same exact databse here even the dl counters are the same. Gives us all more exposure so no probs here

I don't have a problem with my content being up on there.

What I do have a problem with is Stardock/WinCustomize not telling us our stuff would be on another site as well.

I don't think it's another site, just a store front linked to this site data base. I think everythings uploaded to this site only.

Another thing, the site is poorly designed. I especially don't like how they did the hover links.

if it is a completely seperate domain, regardless of what backend supplies the content, the fact is that it is another site. because of this stardock should be up front about the fact that they make content submitted to wincustomize available on xpthemes.

another thing i do not like is the fact that xpthemes has never been officially endorsed or announced by stardock, which makes me feel as if there is something about xpthemes that they do not want to disclose. i am not one for conspiracy theories however i dislike when i am faced with issues like this.

I'm wondering if it might be a test site. After all, the design wasn't too hot, a few things were screwed up, and portions (such as chat) link directly to a chat applet on the stardock site rather than having its own.

If it is just a test site my ire is greatly diminished, but I still wish they had informed us about their plans.

I don't think the site is poorly designed. I think it was meant to have that XP default look. Doesn't it say something in the upload agreement about permission to use? If so, it may indeed cover this topic.

I don't mind the XP look, but it was poorly implemented.

It was the poor implementation I was referring to. While I'm not fond of the XP look, I'm not counting it against them when I refer to the poor design.

hmmmmm.... I don't mind it to much myself, BUT it should be noted when uploading that it will be or possibly used as a "show peice" on another site called "www.xpthemes.com". While I am not specifically offended by this I am concerned about others and them not knowing what is going on.

New talent should be important to skinning site and making them feel uncomfortable by posting work on other sites should be explained even if it is really just a technicality.

I do think it chould be noted in the future in the upload section. It doesn't have to be a super announcement, but it should be readable when uploading.

For me, no big deal... at least for now.

I'm sur FrogBoy will be along shortly to explain where we're at with regards to this alternate 'site'.
As I recall it was 'mooted' but hadn't formally been put into play.

Needless to say, the rights of the individual skinner/uploader will be protected and public notification/clarification will be forth-coming.

Please remember that Wincustomize.com and its crew are 'in the game' and in no way would they/we jeopardize their good standing with something at odds with proper protocol.

My guess is that the site 'got noticed' before it was due for airing...
