/me needs a guru.....

As some of you may know, since I got my broadband connection I have been having trouble with my uploads to this site getting corrupted in the transfer from my computer to the Wincustomize server. Now, the strange thing is, I can send files by e-mail, or by messenger, and everything is fine. I need to talk to someone who knows broadband inside out to try and cure this as it's really becoming annoying.

Is there a website or forum where these guys hang out? Does anyone know a broadband expert who could help me? Are any of you experts in this field?

My ISP (NTLworld) have been no help at all, they said it was my fault for trying to upload big files!!! (I don't consider 128k to be a big file, do you?) and they said it's not a fault at their end, so they are not interested. I need to know if there are some settings I can adjust in my Network connection (bearing in mind that I have tried many things already with the assistance of T-Man, who has been a great help) or if its something to do with my network card or my digital set top box modem, or anything really!

I really need some help with this, pleeeeeeeze. So if any of you guys have any ideas, I will try anything!
Thank you............Bryan (BoXXi).

If your OS is XP open the Run dialog and enter "sfc /scannow" this will do a system file check

I tried this myself last night, man was that a pain, I don't know if it did anything good or not, but
at least my computer is still working...

listen to paxx and tman. troublshooting steps should work from simple to complex

1:: other forms of upload are working, such as email attachments. therefore it's probably not your isp or your computer.

2:: next, eliminate the application from the mystery. dl mozilla from http://www.mozilla.org/releases/#1.2.1 [click the 'microsoft windows' link] and try uploading with that. if your upload goes well, you know it's ie's fault. if it fails, it's somewhere in your net settings.

3:: if you have any ie add-ons, such as common-names, gator or various toolbars and the like, do your best to ditch these.

Are you using a proxy server? They are known to cause problems like this.

Hi guys! Thanks again for the great input!
I just installed Opera Browser, did a test upload, and the screenshot was o.k. but the zip was corrupted when I downloaded it to my system. So, I guess that rules out IE6 problems.

I ran that sfc/scannow thing. I am going to do a test upload with IE6 now, just to make sure.

Opera gave me a little more information..... the files I uploaded were 2.9Mb, upload speed was 12kbs and it took 5 minutes 31 seconds.
Back soon.........

Hmmm... Opera just crashed when I hit the Submit button.

Trying a test upload with IE6 now.............

Mig: I don't use any add-ons at all, and I think I just ruled out browser problems.

I don't use a proxy server.

I Have XP Pro, I am surprised the SFC does not work on Home. I'm sorry my info did not help you out. Unfortunately the reg edit is the only other alternative I can see. It doesn't uninstall IE it just lets the fresh download think its not there. and basically your doing a upgrade install IE6. I'll look into the SFC on Home.

oops I didn't realize that the message I read was on page one of this thread... ignor my last message... I got to get used to this new format in the forums...
what about considering a couple more possiblities that don't include IE6.
1. is the XP built in fire wall causing issues. turn it off no change put it back on.
2. If you installed any new software or drivers since you began with this new ISP. Update your NIC drivers from the Manufactures website.

Static: i DID run the sfc thing. No change though. I don't think a fresh install will make a difference, as I am having the same problem when I use Opera too.

I'm getting closer to plugging the old dial up modem back in!! So frustrating!

Incidentally, I read somewhere that the modem cable should not be in close proximity to any other electrical cables. I have moved mine as far away as possible from all the others, but, due to my modem being part of my digital TV box, the cable does run close to the back of the TV. Is this likely to have a significant effect?

Also, this problem occurred when I used a USB connection to my computer, I replaced the USB connection with a LAN card, but the problem persisted. I'm beginning to think that it's a setting somewhere in Network Connections, but a lot of the stuff in there is way over my head.

I'm now on DSL, I can tell you that at one point I used cable and I also ran a Digital Cable box on the same line and I constantly got interferance with both. as you said BoXXi try your dial up again see if that works if it does work then you know that your internet related software are not responsible for the corruption. Then you will know its the Cable... Call them back with that info...

Bryan:You spoke about your system being new.Is it possible someone at tech support might can help.Sometimes they can but most times they can not. There is a Ask Dr. Tech click on the pcpitstop page, for 19.95 they will help the best that they can to solve your problem. If your computer is new your tech support should still be in effect maybe?

Patrick: I really don't like the tech support lines. Most times I wait 40 to 60 minutes to speak with someone, and usually I end up knowing more than they do! They just go through the script that they are given to deal with the hopeless types that phone up wondering why their comp won't work in a power cut!

I just updated the drivers for my network card(SMC EZ PCI Card 10/100). Don't know if it will help, but it can't do any harm.

Bryan:While I must admit you are right about the Tech Support option. When you have no where eles to turn It may be worth a shot.Sometimes when I get a tech I do not like I will polietly hang up and call back straight away to get another person,,and sometimes they are so nice and knowledgeable and fix my problem. And sometimes not. When I hear you say T-Man is stumped Your really getting out of me depths.I did look at your numbers from DSLreports,,They looked ok but ping times where a bit high. The report said your data stream transfer was good too, although I do not know how you got this conclusion looking at your esarlier post about a 5 minute+ 2.9m upload.Pushing large files thru a very small hole very likely will cause corruption. Is the preinstalled firewall in XP turned off?Dang I am so sorry about your problem,,is cable modem an option?Just for a try?Gosh Dang BoXXi I despise DSL!!

QOS Packet Scheduling. If you go into Control Panel Network Connections and right click the connection, choose Properties, Networking, highlight QOS Packet Scheduling and click Uninstall. Reboot and bob's yer uncle as they say. Might not solve the problem but it will speed up your connection.

Sorry I didn't get back to you last night but I needed my beauty sleep

Uninstalled Packet scheduling.......time for another test......I won't hold my breath
Reply #44 Top
Didn't work. Connection not noticably faster either.

cable modem not an option.
Yes Patrick, strange about the upload speed, looked good on the tests, only 12kbs when I uploaded to Wincusto! Odd!

Any more suggestions?

I have to go to work now......will check back later.

OK, now we've tried everything, whatever is left, however unlikely, must be the problem. Despite what NTL say your line is borked. The only way to test that is to attach another pc...

Some day when I get a moment I will try to find a different upload component for our website to see if that could be problem. Maybe there is some sort of incompatability or bug with it.

Fuzzy! Help! Ever since I uninstalled QOS Packet scheduling, my computer is running real slow, and the corruption is worse than ever. Also, IE6 takes a full 2 minutes to start, even before it finds my home page. Can you tell me how to put it back on? I went back in to the settings, but it's not there anymore. Where do I get it from?
