ObjectDock Beta coming

ObjectDock Beta coming

https://www.stardock.com/objectdock/odock-nov02.jpg

This week.

Basics about this beta:

# Freeware

# Should be vastly faster than anything out there.

# Supports two engines: GDI+ / Custom (so even on a crummy S3 laptop like mine it's lightning fast because I can use the custom engine).

# Lots of little polish niceties. When IM wants you, it bounces. When you drag something far enough off of it, it puffs into smoke. Drag things not so far away they fly back into place smoothly. Lots of other things like that. Launched apps bounce while being loaded.

Why create this?

Stardock's had this in its internal labs for 2 years. Basically for learning what could and couldn't be done with future parts of Object Desktop visually we wanted to see if Windows was capable of doing "the dock". So we made it. But we never bothered to release it since it is so heavily influenced by the Mac and contrary to what some Mac fanatics say, we don't try to make software that exploits their innovation.

But since there have been several other of these dock-like apps released and Apple hasn't seemed to care about that, we thought we'd release this as freeware so that others can give it a try.

If you really like working like this, I strongly suggest you consider getting a Mac. The latest ones are quite affordable. I now have an iMac for instance. I think that's probably one of the reasons Apple hasn't gone after these dock programs is because it's free advertising. But anyway, it does offer a different way of working.

I can't imagine though using this without using Object Desktop together with it (for at least using ObjectBar for a replacement Start bar).

Snowzone: Try hovering over the icon next to the link. This should show a tooltip with the link.

Bishop: It's planned that ObjectDock will be integrated with ObjectBar to provide a nice menuing system for ObjectDock... which would also provide for a system tray replacment as well! (You could either have it in a bar and put it somewhere on the screen, or have it popup upon clicking an item, etc)

Anyone having trouble with the mouseovers?
I have no MO function at all....... no text, no magnifacation. If I move an item the mag works, but other than that, nothing.

I've added a new program to the applications side of the dock, and when I try to set the image, I just get a small set to choose from.
How do I add more images to that set?
TIA

Mr Shatfield: there is a sub-folder off of the objectdock folder. You can put all the icons (and .png's) in that folder you want. You can also create other sub-folders off /objectdock to 'categorize' your icons. However, all the images from all the sub-folders will be shown at the same time in the window you choose from.

You can add png images, and/or icons to the Crystallized folder in the Objectdock directory, and they will be available to use on the dock.

Ok, then I've found a bug
I extracted the 32x32x256 icon from VB6, and placed it in that folder. Then I tried to use it for the application in the dock, and the dock crashed!

Any ideas?

Ok, I checked out one of the icons that is shipped with ObjectDock, and it had all of the different sizes with 16.7 million colors.. so it appears that ObjectDock is having problem with missing icon images.

Would someone like to make some icons more applications than is shipped with ObjectDock?

Mr Shatfield, check the IconPackager library at the Wincusto Site here:

https://www.wincustomize.com/skins.asp?library=2

There are more icons than you can shake a stick at

If you don't mind paying a *very* small amount for an absolutely incredible icon suite, check out Paul Boyer's (mormegil) Orion suite here:

https://www.wincustomize.com/store/

It's the Orion icon suite on the top right...The *best* suite of amazing icons you'll ever find.

Ok, taking your first suggestion, I downloaded the "Black Glass Folders" IconPackage, and placed all of the files in a folder under the ObjectDock folder.

I then added a new shortcut, and clicked on "Change Image" and all of the new icons showed up, and looked good. So far, so good.

Then I selected an icon, and clicked ok, and then received the message "ObjectDock has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Not good
