ObjectDock Beta coming

https://www.stardock.com/objectdock/odock-nov02.jpg

This week.

Basics about this beta:

# Freeware

# Should be vastly faster than anything out there.

# Supports two engines: GDI+ / Custom (so even on a crummy S3 laptop like mine it's lightning fast because I can use the custom engine).

# Lots of little polish niceties. When IM wants you, it bounces. When you drag something far enough off of it, it puffs into smoke. Drag things not so far away they fly back into place smoothly. Lots of other things like that. Launched apps bounce while being loaded.

Why create this?

Stardock's had this in its internal labs for 2 years. Basically for learning what could and couldn't be done with future parts of Object Desktop visually we wanted to see if Windows was capable of doing "the dock". So we made it. But we never bothered to release it since it is so heavily influenced by the Mac and contrary to what some Mac fanatics say, we don't try to make software that exploits their innovation.

But since there have been several other of these dock-like apps released and Apple hasn't seemed to care about that, we thought we'd release this as freeware so that others can give it a try.

If you really like working like this, I strongly suggest you consider getting a Mac. The latest ones are quite affordable. I now have an iMac for instance. I think that's probably one of the reasons Apple hasn't gone after these dock programs is because it's free advertising. But anyway, it does offer a different way of working.

I can't imagine though using this without using Object Desktop together with it (for at least using ObjectBar for a replacement Start bar).

Runs well so far on Win2k, sp2, with Talisman as shell. I'm in the process of looking it over. When I have downpat and am done making it match, I'll post a shot of mine later.

Thanks again.

Requests so far ( or a guiding how-to if they are already possible )

picking what side the taskbar is on, and which side it adds new icons to,

picking the screen position,

whether it zooms up or down ( in case you were to choose for it to be on the top of your screen area )

Great work so far, though, it is perfectly usable as-is. btw, whats with the IRC screenshot? I was just lookin to see if I could change the position setting internally

Hrm... I have been monkeying around for a bit and I have found that it isn't working as well with Talisman as I thought. The taskbar doesn't seem to be refreshing now. I would *swear* it was originally. I get the apps that are running when I launch it, but new ones don't appear and old ones don't disappear. There have been some quirks with the beta systray and taskbar of late, perhaps that is the issue.

I'll keep ya posted

Jafo - Looks like fun....if I can work out how to get rid of the grey bit....

Quick, we need to get Jafo to a bar NOW!

he is obviously seriously ill!

/me finds it hard to believe the normal Jafo could ever want to get rid of some gray!

so far i have yet to see/get to the link :/

i would just go there directly via the web browser but i don't know what link contains...

leads me to a wincustomize browser suggestion: show the text of any link when hovering over it.

is the objectdock available through the cm?
