Wallpapers question...

I was just wondering, do most people prefer to download bitmaps or jpegs? Obviously, the file size and download time of jpegs is much better, but which format do people prefer?

baker is a man of strong, valid, unwavering opinion, not always totally in accord with everyone, but still well respected.

Argument, and/or opinion only need be founded on a modicum of logic and reason to find acceptance.

Yes, I DO 'read anything that people say'. The difference is I also tend to comprehend what is said.

Were people in general privvy to the dross that is often uploaded in the guise of 'wallpapers' here and thankfully rejected, my humorously intended comment re what to upload to guarantee rejection would have more pith.

The wall section won't be removed. It is a valid and worthwhile portion of what is regarded as 'GUI customizing', albeit a popularly accessible one, requiring less 'skinning-oriented program interface' understanding to create it. [though just HOW some people manage to discover a resolution that does NOT exist in a PC/monitor environment is beyond me]...

Frequently, an artist/contributor will experience a 'moderation' of one [or more] of his works and 'logically' deduce that he is being victimized. It happened back in the genesis of skin site 'wall moderation', years ago at skinz.org and it happens here....as sure as night follows day.
Then a thread will appear demanding 'why?' in one form or another, and the site's admins will be obliged to respond, yet again.

The submission of works to this site can be regarded as a 'right'. It IS a 'free world'.
The acceptance of these same works is, however a 'privilege', not a right, and are subject to criteria for acceptance, just as members' conduct is 'criteria for acceptance'.

I guess this won't be the last time that the wall moderation process is discussed/validated....maybe I should copy/paste all of them together and title it 'War and Peace'....[it'd end up about the same size]....

Thanky, Jafo. And re: my comments on the wallpaper section. I don't advocate getting rid of it, BUT i do think that the strenuousness of moderation is a good way of 'keeping it in its place'. I think you guys should be exactly as selective as the section is draining on resources. It looks good to me so far.

The section is popular but ive noticed people "grow up from it" start making walls and relize that making skins is a good thing as well and begin doing the thing, its to lure artists. I make walls but am also making skins, but i try different techniques with my walls all the time to learn something new.

"The submission of works to this site can be regarded as a 'right'."

It is a right we are being provide witha FREE place to display our stf, as long as its to the standards i think it is well worth being a little picky and choosy.

Listen JamMeister, it's quite simple really: if you can immediately tell in a wallpaper what it was done with, then the artist has failed his artwork and the wallpaper should not be accepted here. It's not just Bryce, it's anything. If I can look at a wallpaper and scream "Photoshop Lens Flare!!" you can bet it won't pass moderation, just like another lame Bryce landscape.
Now, if you master Bryce to a point where we'll scratch our head and ask "Wow! How on earth did he make that?". I mean, some of the most beautiful digital art I've seen were done in Bryce, but if the artist hadn't told me, I would have never believed it.
The particular problem with Bryce is that you need to really be good to make something nice with it. Probably years of practice.

On the other hand, I can look at a piece of great art and immediately tell what technique was used; whether the artist used a brush, pastels, oils, etc.; what style the artist was using. Has the artist then failed because I can tell all this just from looking?

Not the same, motion. Because conventional art doesn't have any automation tool. You have to make the art yourself from scratch.
Sorry. Good try though.

well, I think I should give my opinion...

I see things this way, latelly if you browse thru our wallpapers section (without looking at the name of the authors) during the last 2 or 3 months of uploads, you will note something.

It looks like 80% of the walls were done buy the same person, it doesn't mater who did. I mean, they look all the same to me.

Anyway, just my 2 cents...

It seems to me that people tend to make things that are popular at the moment, to get more downloads, maybe.

In fact I am seeing this hapenning not just in the walpaper section, other skins sections too, just using the schemes and styles that are popular.

If you don't mind, would like to give just one small advice.

Dare, venture, risk yourself, don't follow the flock. Use the scheme you want and the app you want, but please, be original.
