Wallpapers question...

I was just wondering, do most people prefer to download bitmaps or jpegs? Obviously, the file size and download time of jpegs is much better, but which format do people prefer?

Because of my horribly slow connection, the smaller the better. .jpg if not compressed too much, werx 4 me.

That's what I'm most concerned about, the people with dial-up connections. With broadband it doesn't matter.

.jpg at about 10% compression, maybe even 15%, but no more than that

High quality jpeg would certainly be my choice simply because winXP can set almost anything as a desktop wallpaper...

a 1280x960 wall in bmp form is about 3mg at 100% quality a jpg is only 1.5mg, while at 99% quality is goes down to around 700k to 600k

Extemely valid point, and exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for...

I don't mean to get on my high horse or put anyone down or criticize anyone or anything in any way....
Wow, that almost hurt...
BUT, I just don't understand the bias against Bryce on this website...
Gee, it would be wonderful if we were all just so proficient in Photoshop... or would it?
Creativity is it's own proof.
Artistic creation speaks for itself, either people like it or they don't like it.
How was it made, Man?
Who cares and what does it matter?

Well, I don't want to call anyone a "Coward" but I sure seem to be ignored....

That's okay, tomorrow you'll have forgotten all about it and that's fine too...
Ask me if I care?

JamMeister...Bryce and Terragen are much like Photoshop filters....they all do 'fun' things, but are only as good as the talent/vision/creativity of their users.
Unfortunately, all of these 'can' appear to create 'artworks', but, in fact, are often as 'creative' as colouring by numbers.

Most people don't want to see "hey, look what [proggy 'X'] done!"...they want to see "hey, look what [person 'x'] did".

There is a distinct difference.
Being suitably adept at keeping the colour inside the outline shows deftness, but not creativity.

This does not mean that all Bryce is bad, just that bad artists use Bryce badly.

There are quite a few who DO use Bryce, and other similar proggies really, really WELL, and their work is accepted without question.

I've seen fine sculpture created with a chainsaw, where others just manage to chop off a leg.

Any tool needs mastery....

I still feel that you badly underestimate Bryce, Jafo...
You obviously do not use the program.
I do agree on Terragen, it's basically a Bryce wannabe program.
Please don't feel that I'm attacking you personally, that is not the case at all.
I just love Bryce, I have used it for many years and I know better than most what it is capable of.
I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I know more than a few tricks with it.
Until I become as proficient with others, say "Photoshop", I will continue to use my favorites...

90% Wallpapers made with Bryce don't have "BRYCE" written across them, and yet you tell almost immediately. Why? Because the style isn't that of the artist, it is the style of the APP. The higher the level of automation, the more responsibility you have to overcome it.

I think I'll go downtown tomorrow and demand to know why they don't respect my God-given right to hang Bryce artwork in their galleries. I'll take notes for ya, Jam, it should be enlightening.

pffft. Gripe here about moderation, or bitch there about being buried by drek. Your choice, you'll be bitchin either way.

I'm not bitchin' bakerstreet!
I just don't fell that Bryce should be ostracized.

Bakerstreet...see my latest art...it was almost all hand/mouse done and I doubt will be popular here.

I like the challenge of trying to be popular on this site and yet be using programs and techniques that most seem to look down upon.

JamMeister...just to clarify...I look UP to Mobius Co, and he uses Bryce [shock-horror!]. His work does not scream 'made with Bryce', for him it's just a tool that he uses, like any other...

If you REALLY want to guarantee instant rejection, try a dolphin, in a palm tree on an island at sunset with a lens-flare, then upload it in a non-functional resolution, say, 875x399, save as a lossy compressed jpeg and make sure it has your email addy and website emblazonned across it in 96 point lettering, preferably multi-fonted...

dark_seraphim , JamMeister33: seriously, look around. You are not being realistic. What kind of site is this? Is this a cutting edge, hip, art site? Is this a grandmotherly seasonal wallpaper site?

Hell no! It's a *skin* site. The wallpaper section here is, and should be, looked upon as dubious waste of resources. It's a good thing only so far as it compliments the skins and apps. To over-tax a skin site in the expensive transfer of wallpapers makes no sense, and is the reason some sites have gone under, imho.

My point is, if you want to really focus on wallpaper art, maybe you ought to divide your time between here and a site that focuses on wallpaper art. If you want to focus on Bryce art, maybe you oughtta find a place where the 'genre' *cough* is appreciated more.

I'm not saying that your stuff doesn't belong, I'm just saying that it *may* not *always* belong, and that is not a bad thing. You shouldn't leave in a huff, you should just have reasonable expectations of how much of an audience you will find. Wallpapers are just one section out of many here.

WC can't afford not to be choosy about wallpapers. They have to *pay* for them, coming and going. Every 2 meg wallpaper is twenty 100k skins.

P.S. Jammeister: yes, you are bitchin', and I don't mean in the surfer-dude kind of way.

Okay, bakerstreet...
I hear what you're saying, but the wallpaper section of this site is certainly a popular if not integral part of the whole picture.
Believe me, I'm in the process of learning to make WinXP windowblind skins and I will not upload anything until I feel that it is worthy.
I don't want to argue with you or Jafo or anyone else on this subject.
I just want to contribute in my own way and hopefully grow with the site.
Am I asking too much?

Then eliminate the wallpaper section and be done with it then.

It's obviously worthless to you, so get rid of it!

Yes, he does, but you obviously don't. You are ranting to people who can't do anything differently, and wouldn't if they could. Deviantart doesn't moderate, why not go there, upload until you drop from exhaustion, and save the whining? You have your answer, why ask again?

Right now your argument is: "You are mean for not liking my stuff, and I am gonna whine until you like it!" A bit... um... pathetic, maybe?
