When someone thinks that there's not much more you can do to customize Windows...think again.

DesktopX 2 will, amongst other things, let you treat your desktop icons as "objects" (rather than requiring that you replace your desktop). It has built in settings for adding shadows, glows, and other effects right to your desktop and allows for setting their sizes for different states all with animation.

This desktop screenshot is using Mormegil's Orion icon suite. I have them set at 72x72 for my desktop and 32x32 everywhere else. And I added a shadow to the icons.

> But will it be able to add a shadow to ANY object, even if its not an icon or a zoomer?

Not done already, but it definitely is on the top of the todo list. It is mostly an issue of fitting all options in the States GUI for DX objects. There could be an extra panel called "Shadow" near "Alpha", "Animation" etc config panels.

Btw, the ss doesn't make justice to IconX labels. They can have all those options as well and can be so much cooler.

just out of interest: does it still install that trayserver.exe app and does this still get written to the autostart section of the registry every time you run DesktopX?

if you want DX to replace your system tray, then you are still going to need "trayserver.exe", the same as OB.

i dont know about the registry updating though.

i am not using explorer.exe as shell, so i don´t want DesktopX to touch my systray at all. actually trayserver.exe is causing a lot of trouble at log-in when one is using alternative shells. so the last time i tried DesktopX i always had to close DesktopX and and delete the registry entry before shutting down.

from what i heard about DesktopX i would be interested to have a look at it again, but i would really like to have an option not to install trayserver.exe (i also heard it causes problems with HoverDesk).

If You set the right parameters in DX ('disable system tray support'), trayserver.exe will not be loaded at startup anymore.

thanks, i´m waiting to test-drive DesktopX 2 then hope trayserver.exe stays away from the registry as well with this setting.

there is also plan B, simply rename trayserver.exe

works a treat with OB, but i dont know about DX.

normally found in:
c:\program files\common files\stardock\trayserver.exe
