Can any of the resident experts on the US gun laws explain why either of the following weapons have ANY place in a legitimate gun owners hands.
1. Mach 10 and derivations of same.
2. The maker escapes me but .... a rifle constructed of hi-tech materials to the highest standards, chambered for the Browning 50 calibre M2 round.
Rational opinions rather than the usual knee-jerk 'cause we can' answers please.
Re the question of knives, yes indeed, very much the weapon of choice among a certain ethnic group, along with chains and numchuckers (qv) ....

Wombat, neither of the above weapons has an reasonable, defensible use in the hands of a private citizen. At least not one that I've ever heard of. I trashed my beloved old .45 caliber semi-auto-only Thompson with 60 round clip when it occurred to me the horrendous damage that a fool (or worse) could do with it in a mere 8 seconds. (The realization came while I was firing the weapon myself).

I had a 357, six shooter and when the eyes got worse, I sold it and bought a Glock 9mm. More bullets, Didn't have to be as accurate. I hold a concelled hand gun permit, which means that I went thru all the background checks. My weapon is strictly self defence. As I live in a free country I cherrish my right to bear arms. Crooks can get illeagal weapons whenever they want and I like to be prepared. Jafo, if I remember my history, Wasn't Australia a former penial colony? That might be why they are more tight on gun control!

I'm not even getting into this one.....
I think everyone already knows where I stand on this.

On the topic of kids who are taught about guns from an early age. It's true. Statistically, they do not commit the crimes or be hurt by guns. But, that takes education and people paying attention to the child. Teaching right from wrong (I'm sure you see where I am going with that....) It is also why minors have to take gun safety classes before getting a hunting permit.

Jafo, do you also oppose nations having militaries? They have guns too you know.

somehow i believe that if you would teach your children about sex or evolution in your schools instead of guns, that would have a more positive effect on your society. but that´s just me.

My view on creation:
There is absolutely no conflict between creationism and evolution and the big bang theory. Scientists are merely trying to explain the methods God used to do what he did.

As for sex, I just hope I don't have a daughter I might end up using my guns offensively

How can people casually discuss the gun injury rate amongst children? I'm just pleased to say the schools here don't teach children about guns and the injury rate is nil. What a frightening country.

A gun has only one purpose. Who ever owns one must be prepared to use it for that purpose or why own it. Just remember, like all weapons, guns are useless in the end...

The schools don't teach about guns in the US. That is up to the parents who own guns themselves. There are government run gun safety classes that minors must take to get a hunting permit.

It's like all education "teach your children well." It's up to the parent to talk to their children and teach them right from wrong.

My daughter will know about guns. She will also know that they are used only to kill. She will also know that ammo and guns are stored separately. I will teach her to respect life, as I do.

I could never kill an intruder in my house. You know why? Even if I retreated to the farthest place in my house, and decided it was the only option, it would take me too long to get a gun, put it together, and get it loaded.

These shootings are senseless. I truly feel for the families involved. I hope this violence will make people start teaching their children more about how to avoid violence, or maybe just start paying a bit more attention to our children. I'm not saying that all parents ignore their children, but in a world of more broken homes and poverty stricken single parent families each year, it's not surprising that our children are more violent and grow up to be more violent adults. Not sure how to change that.

Your all right. Weapons have one purpose, to KILL. I own one. Would I go out a shoot people, NO. Thats not the way I was brought up. If it was him, her or me, then it's going to be them. No hesitation. Life is precious, but to me mine is more precious.

The only problem with children is their parents; children aren't born violent or disruptive, it's something they learn. It's a sad fact that a lot of people either cannot cope with being a parent, or just don't know how. But as you say, how do you change that?

FL - "What a frightening country" . You must scare awfully easy. I go all over Houston at all hours unarmed without any significant fear of being attacked. I'm always aware of my surroundings, but very rarely nervous at all. I'm in far more danger of being bitten by a rabid skunk, rattlesnake, or disease-carrying mosquito than of being attacked by other humans. Pa-leeeze!

Jobleca: I got my guns after 17 cars and 11 houses were torched in my neighborhood (3 of the cars belonged to close neighbors) and a guest at my house had all the windows in his van smashed.

You see, in Canada, when that happens we get an security system installed. Seems more appropriate to me, but hey, that's just me. I'm weird like that. :/

Larry: My source says that violent crimes in Canada has been decreasing throughout the 1990's, but then again it says that it also has in the US.

Just for fun, here's an interesting article about comparative crimes in Canada and the US: http://www.canoe.ca/CNEWSLaw0112/18_vio-cp.html
Basically, we have less voilent crimes, but more house breaking.

Quick poll for fun: what would you do if you heard some noise in your house in the middle of the night?
a) Make noise so the robber knows there is somebody in the house so he can run away
b) Call 911 then gather my spouse and kids and try to escape through the window/hide under the bed
c) Grab my gun/Baseball bat/any kind of weapon and go get him
d) any other

Me, it would be B, but unfortunatly the bedrooms are on the 2nd floor. So it would be a combo of A, B and C: I'd call 911, make noise, grab a heavy object and go in the kids room by the door, ready to hit anybody who'd try to enter.

You mean a security alarm will prevent hoodlums from torching your house or car? WOW!

My security system is called a gun. Not only can I use it to prevent assualts on myself or my property, it's immediately at hand (whereas the police often take more than half an hour to respond).

Quick poll response: C, and have my housemate call 911. If a robber breaks in, I'm likely too pissed to let him just run away, at least not without a couple more holes than he arrived with

One big reason that many Americans have guns is that our police are just about useless and our court system often lets go the criminals that the police sometimes DO manage to catch! I suspect our crime rate would drop dramatically if we first shot all our lawyers.

paxx - "You see, in Canada, when that happens we get an security system installed" and then "Basically, we have less voilent crimes, but more house breaking" . Hmmm!!
Just kidding , paxx. I too believe in alarm systems.

Yes, Bangkokboy, I was waiting for somebody to pick that one up. Didn't take too long.
But, I'd rather get my house robbed 50 times than get killed.

Jobeleca, our thieves are not armed (99.99% of them aren't), so most likely if you make noise they'll run away. Thieves usually make sure there's nobody home before they come.

alarm systems + guns = better
