Pinned post maximum now set at 4

CAn't get anymore docs to show up in app list

First off let me say thank you for an awesome product. This is my first Windows 8 laptop and you've made the change effortless for me.

Until this last update I was able to have more than four documents show up in an app sublist (on the right after you follow the app arrow) Now after 1.2 I can only get the four most recent docs to show. I even tried pinning those four to get it to add others, but to no avail. Especially in programs like Excel I use way more than four docs on a regular...read that as daily...basis.

I've looked thru all the configure for Start8 and can't find a place to change the number. Is there hope for me? :-)

The number of pinned items is controlled by the OS setting which can be set from the taskbar properties as it impacts the jump lists from the taskbar too.  I imagine you have somehow set it to 4.

Uhmmm...nope. Sorry. All the tabs for Properties in Windows 8 say is Taskbar...which allows for the positioning, hiding, and size of buttons...Jump Lists...which has number of recent items displayed...Which I even set to 20...(with no change) and save recent programs is checked, and save and display recent open items in Jump lists is checked...but there is NO number to set, and the third tab is toolbars you want showing.

No counter for number of recent open items. And I might add that I still have a laptop with OS Windows 7 and there is no "counter" to set the number of recent open items either.

Start8 listed them fine before this 1.2 update...can I change back to the former version?

The number of recent items to display in a jump list is the number to set.  The expanded part of the start menu is the very same jump list as shown when right clicking the taskbar button for a running app.

Note that once reduced to a lower number the OS may have truncated saved lists and so it will not show more until more documents for an app are opened.

If you right click on the taskbar button for the app like excel (when open), are you getting more documents listed?

Regarding 1.16, if you contact [email protected] they may be able to send you an older installer, but I imagine you will find the same issue.

Uhmmm..also negatory good buddy. I have the jump list set to 10. And I didn't have this issue with the older version.

Thank you for your thoughts.

So you are only getting 4 visible when you right click the app from the taskbar too?

Right clicking the app on the taskbar only shows the same number of docs that are saved in the right sidebar after clicking the arrow beside the app in Start8...no matter how many others I've opened and closed.

This would certainly seem to be an OS or app level issue with saving new documents to the lists then rather than a Start8 issue with reading them then.

It might be worth seeing if another app like notepad can have more than 4 in the list as if so it would point to the office apps not saving to the lists and so it might be a setting in those apps.

With Notepad in the Start* jump list it doesn't show ANY of those recently opened docs.

And I hate to disagree with you since you work for Stardock...but Start8 worked FINE up until I go the new update last week. So no...it isn't anything to do with my OS.

Thank you for your thoughts.

I think you may not have quite understood my point here.

Start8 uses the information the operating system provides exactly as the taskbar does.  Given the taskbar is showing the very same problem it stands to reason that the problem is outside of Start8.  Start8 does not create the list, it does not update the list directly, it simply uses the information the OS has collected / been told to store (by the app).  If there are only four items in that data then that's all Start8 can show and as the taskbar is apparently also only showing four items then clearly that's all that has been saved.

The update of Start8 is simply a coincidence rather than the cause of the problem.  Going back to Start8 1.16 isn't going to alter anything as the taskbar is clearly showing the same issue and that's not our code.

EDIT I have just double checked here on an 8.1 and 8 box and the jump lists are working fine with Start8 1.2.

LOL...and I'm sorry...but you're not understanding me. Excel...which is an app that I ONLY have show up in Start8...only shows the four docs whether I am looking at the second column in Start8 or whether I'm right clicking on the E in the task bar (which only shows in the taskbar when I've opened a doc from Start8) because I don't have it as a resident app on the task bar.

On the task bar..I have my Word app...I do NOT have it open from the Start8 menu...and when I right click that...in the taskbar...it shows the last TEN (10) docs I have opened with it.

Right, but jump lists on the taskbar are controlled by the OS.  Being pinned to the taskbar doesn't alter who shows the jump lists.  Being launched from Start8 doesn't alter it either as Start8 simply runs the shortcut in the same way as it would be if it were pinned or a shortcut on the desktop you double clicked on.  If you pin Excel to the taskbar it will remain the same (and it is worth trying this to confirm it).

Given Excel seems to be the only app with this issue, I suspect the answer lies in a setting somewhere inside that app.  Are there perhaps any settings relating to recent documents?

Looking online for issues with excel and jump lists I found this : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-desktop/excel-jump-list/7c72e31a-4579-406a-8b41-fde27cd9ac17

and this : http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2007-excel/microsoft-excel-2007-excel-jump-list-not-showing/2b169735-7512-4a1e-aa32-569237351a62

In fact it seems rather common.  The name of the files may have changed from 2007 to 2010/2013, but from the looks of it the root issue remains.

Later versions of excel may not use automatic jump lists, but manual ones in which case you may have to go one level down from the directory specified and go into the custom folder.

I've used Excel for 8 years and never had the problem and I DIDN'T have the problem until I updated to Start8 vers 1.2

Thank you for your thoughts.

As I have said before, the installation of Start8 1.2 is merely a coincidence.

Here is an example of a related issue to what you seem to be having : http://superuser.com/questions/206298/excel-recently-used-list-not-showing-on-start-menu-but-working-within-excel

No Start8, not even Windows 8.

I imagine either Excel crashed at some point, or explorer crashed, or the jump lists file got corrupted some other way.  It could even be linked to some document you opened causing a silent excel crash on close.  Either way that's the issue here, not Start8 and it is simply bad timing.  If Start8 didn't show Jump Lists you probably wouldn't have even considered it could be the issue.  Having checked with support I can also tell you that we have no other reports of anything even remotely similar.

I would recommend reading the links I provided before and possibly following the instructions on how to fix it having first made sure you are comfortable with it and having backed up anything important.
