not remembering settings

Ok, I purchased stardock start 8 for my mother because she cannot figure out windows 8. So I purchased start 8 so that I could make it look like windows 7 and make it more user friendly for her. We just got her a new Sony Vaio laptop. Well the installation went fine and I set everything up so that now it looks like windows 7.

 

Now one of the things I did was change the start button from a simple flag symbol to the green button that says the word "start". When I do this all her games and facebook settings work fine. But about every other day, the start button will revert back to the flag symbol and all my start 8 setting are back at default. When this happens, all her games quit working and she can no longer access her facebook games either. I go over, change the setting back (just like the initial setup) and everything starts working again for a day or two before the process starts all over again.

 

Rebooting the laptop makes no difference. Sometimes it will boot up fine on my previously saved settings and sometimes it wont. She does not put the computer to sleep, it is always turned off when not in use. I've had it go for as much as 4 days without resetting and sometimes it doesnt last a single reboot. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

From the description it sounds like the registry is being corrupted and reverted back to an older copy every so often.  That would explain Start8 swapping to the flag which it would default to.

I imagine the Facebook games use cookies and perhaps her login gets deleted too?

None of these issues sound like Start8 is the cause, I think it is just another symptom of whatever is going wrong as Start8 has no ability to wipe the settings.

The only problem with that theory is that everything starts working normally with I change the flag on start8 back to the "start" button. I make no other changes on the computer. Simply change that one button's icon, and EVERYTHING starts working normally. I even thought of leaving the start button as a flag symbol since start8 keeps wanting to revert to it anyway but nothing else works when the start button is a flag. But if I change the flag to "start" then everything, including the facebook and other games start working again. For some reason when using Start8 in default, nothing works, but make one change to Start8 (change the start button icon) and everything works again.

 

Just to be clear, I make no changes to cookies, temp files, or any other settings on the computer. I simply change the icon used for the start button, nothing else and everything starts working again. I even removed start8 and tried standard windows 8 desktop and we had no issues with the games or facebook for over a week. I put start8 back on and we have the issue again less than 24 hours after install. This IS a Start8 issue. I'm just going to have to teach her how to use windows 8 or find another program for converting the desktop and get my money back on this product unless someone has an idea how to fix Start8
