/me doesn't find fuzzy terrifying

tsk...tsk.....how many times do we have to tell you? It's not the size of the weapon that matters- it's how you use it!

BTW, how big are the cars that you drive?

My car is small...s m all. It's a Rover 214SLi 1.4Ltr 103bhp. As you are in the US you've probably never seen one. Here's a link to to a pic I found by doing a quick search. Mine looks the same except for being white and still having the original Rover wheel trims. http://www.roveranonymous.co.uk/rover/images/214sli.jpg

That Rover looks like the 90s Ford Escort 4 doors.....I'm sure your car is of higher quality, though, because, well, there really wasn't much quality to the Escort Yep, that is a small car.

what is the "b" in 103bhp? I assume that hp is horsepower, but what is the b?

So, now FL has done it- he has squished Lecrayon....how messy...
dont ask, it's technical. Anyway, the b is brake, as in brake horse power.

And yes, it's nothing like an escort... >

FL, Break Horse Power doesn't make any sense to me.... can you explain? It is not a term that we use here. And, you can be "technical"- our family hobby is Drag Racing.

From: http://www.dictionary.com/search?q=Brake%20horse%20power

Brake horse power, the net effective power of a prime mover, as a steam engine, water wheel, etc., in horse powers, as shown by a friction brake.

An excellent explanation of the standard method used worldwide (except US apparently) to measure the power of an engine. The more Bhp you have, the more welly you have under the bonnet (hood in US).

I suppose you want an explanation of 'welly' now.

Old Yorkshire saying for expressing strength. Comes from a local competitions to see who could throw a Wellington Boot (welly) the farthest. So, the more 'welly' you have, the more strength you have...simple!

Ahhhh!!!! We measure things the same, we just don't use the "b". The "b" is referring to the way it is measured, which is by dyno (or friction brake, as it is also referred to). We just assume all horsepower is determined by dyno measurements. For instance, my hubby's race car engine (big block chevy) pumps out over 400hp. We just don't add the "b". Same unit of measure, different way of presenting it.

I have actually heard the "welly under the bonnet" phrase before. We call Wellingtons "welly", too (at least that's what I have always heard them referred to as.)

103hp doesn't sound like much....what does it have, like a top speed of 110? Probably gets about 32mpg? Of course, I'm used to the over horse-powered gas guzzlers that we have here. > My husband and I use $250 a month in gas......

Like Audio gear, where output is measured in 'Watts' [RMS]-[PMPO], Engine power has more than one measurement 'method' depending on how much you want to fudge the results....my first car was 10 [RAC] horse power, which equated to about 33 BHP [measured at back wheels].
Bench Dynamometer tests often run the engine only and ancilliary power use for alternators, water pumps etc are handled externally, so the Bench Horse Power [also 'BHP'] will be a fair bit higher...just not 'realistic' when that same motor is designed around crappy, power-draining ancilliaries.
BTW....'RAC' HP was related to swept volume [capacity] and was for taxing purposes, not performance, as such.

Generally, BHP ratings claimed by manufacturers are 'optimistic' at best and down-right deceptive at worst.

Besides...it all matters how the car actually 'goes'...my old VF hardtop [Chrysler] - 225 cu.in. slant six with 160hp went a lot better than the VJ Charger [Chrysler] 245 cu.in Hemi six with 165hp....simply because the VF had a 2-barrel carb and the second throat felt like a turbo coming in...

BTW...with me in Motor racing, of course I'm a bit of a 'Petrol-head'....my first engine swap was at the age of 10....38 years ago...

Top speed 120, 0-60 10.2, 35mpg round town, 48mpg+ on a run. Mine's a bit old to go racing it, I'd like to keep it in one piece a few more years. Cost per week...£10 - £15 petrol... (@ about £3.50 per gallon)
