Anyone get this e-mail?

I received this today:
We are about to upload your material to our website,
but we need YOUR PERMISSION for it !
Our site will be an IT portal, the materials will get their credit ofcourse
and are going to be free of charge to download.
We'd like to hear from you A.S.A.P.

Thank you and best regards,
ITW Hungarian Team

There was no URL for the site, and I wasn't asked previously for my permission, so I said I wouldn't give permission until I had more details.
Anyone know anything about these people?

I like how they've worded the mail to sound exciting, like they're doing you some kind of big favour.

Could simply be an email address validation ruse...

I would strongly advise everyone not to 'allow' anyone else to upload your skins anywhere themselves. If there are no mechanics there for you to upload them, there won't be any there for you to delete them. If they turn out to be punks, or if the nice guy gets fired and his replacement is a punk, or if the nice business sells out to punks_dot_com... etc, etc, etc.

As Jafo said you are taking a chance even answering them, it would be simple to send a spider through wincusto and other skin sites for email addys and probe with a well-targeted email to find valid ones to sell. Regardless, that email should get a big NO from anyone they sent it to, until they fix it so that you can upload and delete yourself.

(I feel the same about any such request, contests especially. You usually void all rights to your stuff when you enter a contest 99% of the time, so the winners get the prizes and the rest of the are a nice pool of stock for them to use later...)

Well guess I was not the only one to get the same e-mail.lol I don't sell any of my 3D yet so no big deal. I did a white unicorn at the age of 8 on a glass floor I painted it in oil before I ever had a computer. My foster parents took it and sold it now I see the damm thing every were I go, on wood, posters, every were. I’ve had so much crap stolen and sold out from under me that is till I learned about a poor mans copy write.

...or a poor man's 'copyright'.... Spell checker

Ah...got it too.
I'd say don't even bother responding...if we can keep an eye on them somehow and stomp on them if they 'upload' without consent...

I received an email the other day and I assume its from the same person. They were asking me if it was ok to use the skins from WinCustomize to place on their site. I informed them that the skins were the property of the authors and that they would need to seek permission from the authors directly.

So though their communication skills are lacking it does appear that they are at least trying to do the right thing.

Yep, I got it too. I asked for more info, but I doubt I'll get it.

Well, I was silly enough (more out of curiosity than anything else) to request more information and received this today:

The materials which I'm speaking of are from WinCustomize.com.
Our website will be launched soon, we had several problems launching it in the past.
The websites purpose would be to bring full info about the latest information technology (IT) products.
We post hardware&software news, tests AND free to download materials(wallpapers, cursors etc.).
Our website address is:
www.itworld.hu and 195.70.37.38
As I mentioned it before currently the site isn't working yet. The launching day will be october 1st, hopefully.
If you want us to remove your materials from our site, you can write us anytime and we'll do it.
Ofcourse we will give the proper credits for your works though we NEED your WinCustomize.com NICK(this would be
important for us to have you in our database),link etc.(or what you'd like us to write ot it).

I will NOT be giving them permission, nor will I be giving them my WC nick. Not sure why they think they need that.

Anyway, it all seems real fishy to me ... as I suspect it is ...

They could easily give skinners access to manage their skins, even if it were a simple web-based ftp. The fact they don't says that they either are of limited ability or they don't *want* you to manage your own skins... for whatever reason. Even more of a solid 'no' now that I see their reply.

I just got the exact same reply, word for word. The fact that they're asking for specific details to do with my WinCust account just makes the whole thing sound even more dodgy.

I won't be giving permission, and I'd urge others to refuse also.

By the way, the address from which these mails was sent to me was [email protected]. I would expect the powers that be here at WC to take appropriate action, should any unauthorized materials from this site show up on theirs.

Well...it's simply not good enough to suggest that they would remove your works if requested....they should not be posting them in the first place.

So....note to them in publc, if they are perusing this thread....

No works currently, or in future which are being hosted by Wincustomize.com shall be displayed or distributed for download on any other site without the PRIOR specific consent of the Artist who posted the works here.
This works remain the property of their author and can only be redistributed with their consent.

To stress again, PRIOR INDIVIDUAL SPECIFIC consent is required. Anything less is a breach of Artists' Copyright and is pursuable in Law.

I got the email and didn't respond. I was going to ask for a url and some details but had't gotten around to it yet. No need now, the url doesn't work yet and I'd probably get the same letter you guys got. I think these are the same guys that were around about six months ago asking basically the same thing. At that point they had a homepage but nothing else.

ahhh i said too go ahead, they seemed alright saying they will give the proper credits for your work but after seeing ya'll got same reply as i did im really hoping they keep their word :o
