Can't run the game. At all.

I've tried to run it through steam and through direct download from stardock

from Stardock Forums

I purchased the game a few days ago from steam and it wouldn't run at all. No notice or anything. I uninstalled it. Downloaded the game from Stardock directly. Game still doesn't run. No "has stopped working" notice. I've tried updating my graphics drivers, using a activation file overwrite, running it in administrator mode; Nothing has worked thus far. When I run it with Task Manager open, the exe shows up for about a second taking up between 9 and 12 K of memory. Then stops. I've also run my virus scan, it's not being blocked by my firewall, and I've run MalwareBytes. Checked the debug.err file. Just three lines long.

Any help would be awesome.

What version of Windows do you have? Are you able to run DxDiag manually from the Run/Search in the start menu?

If the game is failing when it tries to query DirectX for system information (which normally starts at the fourth line in the debug.err file), you may have some major issue with the DirectX installation on your machine, and rerunning the latest DX9 redistributable from Microsoft may help.

I attempted to download both directx 9 latest redistributable and the latest directx. As for the latter, the installer I ran said it was up to date. I'm not sure how to get rid of it to get a fresh install. It doesn't show up in add/remove programs. I also found a copy of the latest directx 9.0 c online but it wasn't through Microsoft. I wasn't sure what directory to put it into. I was hesitant to just drop all those files into the Windows folder. So I just put it into a folder "DirectX" in my program files. I doubt it should be there, but not sure where else to put it.

Given that and the distinct lack of any detail on the video driver section, try getting the latest video drivers for your card directly from nvidia's site.

I seem to have found a solution of a kind.

kryo's post reminded me of when X3 wasn't working and for some reason I had to roll back my video card drivers. So I rolled them back to oldest available archived drivers on nvidia's website. And the game worked! Once. Then it was back to not working for some reason in the exact same way. So I reinstalled the old drivers. And it worked again. So it seems that the game will work. And when I can't start it, which will be often, I have to reinstall my old video drivers.

So: Not Stardock's fault. I had three games, all with different problems. Now I only have 2. Thank you Stardock, even if you didn't specifically fix my problem kryo tried to help until I figured it out and that is why I will always encourage friends to support you. And why people will voraciously pirate Ubisoft. The publisher with whom I'm actively having problems. But y'all? Y'all are cool.

I don't know if the gt 530 has a ton of problems as a video card or nvidia hates it or what, but something to add to the [fixed] list.
