To The People Who Run Wincustomize.com

Dear Sirs,
I tried to download a skin from your excellent site and I was informed that I had already downloaded over 100 MB. Then, I was asked to register and become a member in order to help you run the site and everything.
Well, I wasn’t actually asked. I was TOLD. And since I have no intention to pay for services that never had a price tag to begin with, I prefer not to visit your site again. Me and some 30 others who are facing the same problem. Perhaps hundreds or even thousands more I don’t even know.
Of course, you realize there are many ways I could have overcome this little problem. I could use another name, for instance. Or another computer. I don’t want to stoop to such methods. But you know something? I thought neither would you.
We are all enthusiastic users. It’s an honor visiting a site as wonderful as yours, but it’s also an honor for you, to have people visit and upload skins that, after all, make your trade. More or less, I’m asked to pay for downloading skins (one of them could be mine, if I decided to make one) that were uploaded without any fee. Is this fair? Is this right? Is this contrary to the spirit of sharing and enjoying or not?
So, I will wait to see if your decision will be upturned. I am sure you will see the injustice and change course. Let people who want to subscribe do so. Offer more incentives. Offer a lower price. But let the rest use a site that, after all, promotes the spirit of free art and co-operation.
I remain confident in you and your concept
Pete, Citizen to you who lately was the victim of a coup d’ etat…

I am not sure how it's an honor to have someone download hundreds of megs and not contribute anything at all back. Skins created by Pete: 0.

And I'm not sure how 80 cents per month is a lot.

Sharing implies that there is give and take on both sides.

Offer a lower price. - WOW, didn't realize that $19.95 was so pricey.

Just curious Pete. If you have downloaded a 100MB of skins, what software are they fore. Did you pay for that software?

And if you think this site should be free then answer this for me. Who should pay for my time and others to code the site? or for the server it runs on? or for the shelf space for the server to be at? or for the software installed on the server? or for the bandwidth that you used to download 100MB? If you are the one using it, why shouldn't you help pay for it?

Pete...

It is odd that you never cared enough about anything except your own gratification until your drug was turned off.

You have proven that you are not and never have been a member of this community by your statements in this post. If you had been, you would have seen the last few that went through here with the same issue not even two or three weeks ago.

Since you are now concerned, show some common sense and go digging through the older posts for this issue, worded almost exactly as yours is. You will find your answers there.

You have no comprehension of the true issue and until you educate yourself, you will not receive many favorable suggestions. The truth will set you free. Now go seek it and you will understand why any retort you have will be laughable until you understand.

Also, as with all the others, it is doubtful you will be back to read, reply, and understand. Hopefully the next in your shoes reads the responses to these posts...

No one on this end is stooping to anything, although it is amusing that you would rape the site, never contribute or participate except to complain, and then threaten the community per your admissions above. Again, if you read the past posts similar to yours, you will see how you are capable of being tracked and stopped...banned, in effect.

Again, don't bother arguing back, just go read and try to comprehend what you read, or simply go away.

If this makes sense to you, don't read further or it may get offending, and if you truly care to understand, then we want you in the community and I would regret the below comments, if you choose to be productive. However, if you simply want to mark the territory and not get the background information first, then feel free to continue...

You still here?

Allow me to get belligerent then...

Rapist, leech, user, abuser, whatever you choose to call yourself...you have proven yourself through your actions. Your words cannot change the facts, which are shown through what you have done and justified your title. You used this site and everything it stands for and are trying to be the martyr now.

Here's a quarter...piss off.

Pete - your comments were well thought out and reasonable from an average user's point of view. If this is your first exposure to this debate in the message boards then you're probably not prepared for the offhand dismissal of your concerns. Obviously, there has been a lot of discussion on this topic and most of the threads started by people that have encountered the cap are not as reasonable as yours.

To cover some of the facts about our decision again - we had very few real alternatives to the system we are using. Quite a lot of thought and consideration for the users went into the download restrictions. We were faced with a choice of doing something or not existing. Of all the possible options to deal with the enormous expense of operating a site like this we feel the method we put together is the best for everyone.

Our price of 19.99 for two years is probably the lowest of any subscription site on the web. The benefits offered for a subscription are a great value and are growing all the time. There are several options available to anyone to avoid the download cap. People that contribute to the site with uploads, register the Stardock software they are using, or even just participate in the community in a helpful way can all be exempted from the cap.

We have no pop-up ads assaulting you and try to keep the site oriented completely towards the benefit of the visitors and artists. We truly feel that after examining all the options and considering all the alternative methods to stay online we have come up with the best possible way of surviving without compromising the integrity or value of the site.

You are welcome to stay and continue benefiting from the site. If you are using any Stardock software (Windowblinds etc) and you have registered then you are already eligible to avoid the cap. If you would like to subscribe and get the Skin Browser and other benefits we would welcome you as a contributing member. If none of those are options for you, then we are glad you came by and got some enjoyment from the site.

No one has victimized the artists who skin on this site in any way except you and those like you. You wanted something for free? Fine, you got it - 100meg worth. If you have no interest in contributing, simply take your loot and go.

here's the last post I could find...not a good one, from 16 days ago...there is a better one a little before that I'm still looking for...

(I always hate it when people can't give me exact examples so I am trying to get real examples for you, Pete, in case you really want to look into this. Like I said, if you care, we want you around here and to be part of the community)

Well, here is the last example related taht I can find under the "Two or three weeks ago" quote I made above for proof of this issue being discussed. This last post link discusses the costing issues of the site and bandwidth coverage, mostly.

Hopefully this helps you understand, and hopefully the 30 other people you mention facing the same issue read this post too and comprehend the complications overall...

btw, and you may be doing the research, but do you plan on replying, Pete? We'd like to know what is going on in your head so we can help you understand.

"So, I will wait to see if your decision will be upturned."

Don't wait, it won't.

"I am sure you will see the injustice and change course."

Please, inform me how the people who run this site are doing an injustice by charging for useage over 100mb (thats quite a few skins in reality). Have you ever run a high traffic website out of your own pocket? I thought not, otherwise this post wouldn't exist.

"Let people who want to subscribe do so."

They do.

"Offer more incentives. Offer a lower price."

Golly gee, 100mb worth of free skins and unlimited only $19.95 a year and you get the browser too!

"But let the rest use a site that, after all, promotes the spirit of free art and co-operation."

Howabout we swing on back to reality sometime soon ok? This site dosen't exist in the magical land of free bandwidth and unlimited space. Someone has to pay for it.

It's $19.95 for two years, atm. That really is one of the absolute best deals you can get from a software company. If you would do a little research, you would see you get a *very* nice selection of software for that deal and you can download as much as you want.

Pete...

You seem to like free stuff...here you go:

Download The GIMP for free from http://www.gimp.org/

Read tutorials briefly for The GIMP at http://empyrean.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/~nem/gimp/tuts/ or http://www.gimp.org/tutorials.html or http://gug.sunsite.dk/ or http://www.xach.com/gimp/tutorials/

Use The GIMP to create ONE skin...for anything this site has a library for, no matter how crappy you do

BAM! You have free unlimited downloads...

All it REALLY took was a little time on your part...otherwise free (not counting the cost of your pc, online access, electricity, etc.)

I wish I had written all of that (above) in one long post so every time someone brings this up, I can cut and paste it all at once...
what about exchanging place, you pay the bill and Stardock pay for the subscription to the site!

Another one who wants the world given to them for free. About the only thing free is the air you breath.
