Multiple processes / logons

Hello all,

I noticed an small "error" since a few days. If I start Process Explorer from Sysinternals / Microsoft there is one Start8Srv.exe service but there are several Start8_64.exe processes. I use the newest process explorer 15.3 from 5th February 2013. I use the newest Start8 version 1.11

My system is Windows 8 x64, custom computer, all updates installed.

At first I thought it might be a virus / trojan, but I checked several times. I use Kasperky Antivirus 2013. I am a programmer myself, so above average computer knowledge. There are no 100% surety of anything, but I am as sure as I can be, that there is no virus in my system. Hopefully :)

Here a screenshot, it is immediately clear that there are many more processes than I think should be. (it seems there is one logon (winlogon.exe, dwm.exe, logonUI.exe) for each Start8_64.exe:

Does anybody else have this problem? Is this an known error? I searched the forums first, but found nothing.

Do you need more information?

Kind regards,

David

It is normal for there to be one instance of Start8_64 per session on your machine.

Why you have so many sessions is the question.  Do you have that many logged in sessions?  Have you been using remote desktop into the machine multiple times?

I am the only user. I don't use remote desktop to connect to this computer. I just restarted the computer, there are 14 Start8_64 instances.

If you disable the Start8 service (set it to manual), and reboot, do you still have multiple dwm & winlogon entries?

I set the service to manual and restarted. No multiple dwm or winlogon entries. I manually started Start8 service, now there is a single Start8srv service and a single Start8_64 executable process. This is the way it should be.

To further test is I just set the service again to automatically start and restarted the system. There is a single service and a single process!

I waited for 30 minutes, still a single service and a single process.

Again restart, just to test is further still. There is a single service and a single process!

Not very logical, but it behaves normally now! The simple way of setting it to manual and restarting and resetting it back to automatically start was enough. I am happy now but I will watch it critically for the next few days and weeks. If it happens again, I will let you know.

Kind regards,
David

Today the problem of multiple processes returned. The same as described above.

I tried the same solution (setting service to manual and restart the computer and resetting to automatic and restart). It works again with a single process.

Something is not quite right, somewhere there seems to be a bug.

Kind regards,
David

Earlier this morning after booting I decided to check the details in task manager again and found four instances of the Start8_64.exe running this time.
