tuning GUI and stuff

Hi everyone! Boy! What great graphic artists frequent this site!!

I have installed trial window Blinds 3.4 on my Win98 computer. Yeah, I know... I've read the other messages about it but Social Security doesn't give me ANY extra money to play with so I'm stuck for now.

Someone mentioned tuning Win98 so that Window Blinds would work better with it. I set up the resource meter to check out things and when I'm on this site, the meter runs in the yellow on the last strip.

Can someone tell me, in detail, how to go about tuning 98 to work with window blinds? I sure would appreciate it.

Also.... how and where does one put icons that go with a particular skin? For that matter where does one put the wallpaper that goes with a particular skin?

If I can get these answered and do any good, I will try to save up enough to register WB.

Thanks for all the good work that goes on here, guys and gals.

Your best bet actually is to download WinStyles. This may sound crazy but it has something to help you optimize your computer:

When you load it up, one of the options is "Settings" (button on left). It will show you all the junk getting loaded up on start-up.

What you'll want to do is figure out how mnay of those things you really need to have loaded. Those you don't care about just uncheck the checkbox and they won't be loaded when you boot your machine.

Even if you're not using WindowBlinds, it's probably a good idea to do this from a general stability point of view.

It never ceases to amaze me as to the knowledge people have about computer programs

Thanks. I tried that out and there are a lot of things being loaded that I don't even know what they are. I did eliminate some of them, however.

1. Are those programs in the (I think it's called) the quick launch bar running all the time?
2. If I eliminate them there, does that keep me from using them if they are installed on my computer?
3. Where are special icons placed that a particular theme or skin needs?
4. Are there tutorials that I can download that tells me how to use the programs like object bar, desktopX, control panel, etc.?
5. Do any of the artists just make components for something like WinStyles to use?
6. I noticed that a download of a WinStyle is just text. How is that implemented?

I know that is a lot of questions but you seem particularly knowledgable.

If you can help I would appreciate it. I am trying to decide if I want to spend any extra money I might be able to get on this type of project/s.

Thanks

To answer some of your questions:

1. No, they only run if you click them.
2. There are probably links in your start menu to these programs but there is no need to get rid of them for performance's sake, if you use them alot, quicklaunch is pretty handy.
3. Can't help here, I'm a Litestepper, I have to do things a little differently, but I'm sure someone will step in and fill in any blanks I leave (and I will leave some)
4. See 3 above.
5.& 6. IIRC you need a program called WinStyles to implement that downloaded file. But it will only work if you have the necessary software to run the various skin types.

Hope that helps.
