??? about GHZ and MHZ

I am almost afraid to ask.... I was way at the bottom level for the options on the poll. I have only 399 mhz. Does that mean I need to put in more? I am getting ready to put in more RAM and a second hard drive, and now I see maybe I should think about that too.... Does it make any sense to keep dressing this computer up? I really can't afford a new one for awhile.

thanks

If you use your monitor, keyboard and mouse you ca get a new computer for around $500. Maybe a little less. Upgrading your computer I personally think would be a waste of money.

With a CPU that speed, your motherboard probably won't support a much faster CPU (at least nothing in the GHZ range). If I were you, I'd get a new case with a new motherboard and CPU already in it, and move your drives and RAM into it. Also, as WiseOldMan said, you can reuse your monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.

Well, this is a Gateway computer. I ordered a 256 RAM and a hard drive for $312. I have their credit card and that is the only way I can do anything right now. Do you think it makes sense to call them up and try to change the order if I can?

Thanks

Yes.... I see that it does make sense after I re-read what you said. Sigh.... I better go and do that quick.

I really know nothing about computers at all!

Thanks again,
GM

I am a shameful spendthrift. I canceled the $312 order and a new tower that comes with 1.8 GHTZ, 256 DDR RAM, 40GB Hard Drive, CD Burner, all 2002 software, speakers, 56k modem with an eithernet card and free access here and there (I will not be using the AOL). Also a fancy keyboard (the one I use now is broken) and a matching optical mouse. GULP... for 789 including shipping to Honolulu. It comes next Monday. In the meantime I can get ready to transfer things.... No chance I can just hook them together and kind of drain the one into the other?

I know it is a smarter move computer wise.... but to incurr that much debt right now makes me feel a little queasy.

Thank you for all the advice!

Not bad. Thats beats $312 for the same slow computer.

HEH.... thanks for reminding me! It is next to impossible to feel poor in paradise no matter how much money one doesn't have. The beaches are still warm, the forest is still green. The people still friendly, the food still good.....

HEH... I already rationalized it another way too! I just spent six years saving my big sister's life. I took a stand against my entire family, and against the government too! I got them to take a look at her situation, to listen to what she said, to evaluate her medically. I learned last month that she was granted her benifits. She is much richer than me now (she doesn't even know I had anything to do with it... so she is not angry at me)! In a very real way, this is indeed the first day of the rest of my life. Hardly anyone gets to start over like this. And I even have the priviledge of watching her recover health, happiness, and a secure life! I deserve that pentium four with all those MHZs and MBs and stuffs!

Congratulations to you and your sister. The world is a better place for having the likes of you living in it.

On the bright side, you can still remove your hard drive from your old computer and put it in your new system. Or better yet, network the 2 together so you still have all the programs as before without having to reinstall.

Really? I can hook them together?

Hook them up, make one your mp3 server, the possibilities are limitless.

I spent a whole bunch on my computer too and I haven't regretted it yet (hate sitting around waiting for computerstuff to get done, max waiting time for me is 5 seconds).

Sounds like you deserve to spoil yourself.

I will think about doing that (but they will have to share a monitor).

This computer never really had much speed, sometimes it takes more than a minute to boot up in the morning!

I am really glad for whoever thought to run that poll (Who does that anyway?).... I was thinking if I just put more memory and another hard drive in I could get some speed. I didn't even know about Mhz and Ghz.

And thanks for your kind words juni and Kinrik!

Hm, you really should do something, ok my computer has even only 630 MHZ, but I`m already looking for one with at least 2.0 GHZ.

Don`t try to upgrade, it`s to expensive and it never would fit today`s standarts like 266 MHZ FrontsideBus or 400 MHZ like Pentium 4 has.

Another reason: Computer are so cheap these days....
