Installing an upgrade through Object Desktop??????

I always blow it. I downloaded windowblinds 3.4, I unloaded and uninstalled windowblinds 3.3, I installed 3.4. I chose do not overwrite defaults because I didn't want to lose my customized object bar again. I rebooted and then deleted 3.3. I really like windowblinds 3.4. I think you guys are all like "Wizards of OS". Magical! But whenever I reboot, only the object bars get skinned. I have to manually install the skin all over again. I made sure the settings say to skin it on bootup. I tell it to leave its calling card in my tray. But it doesn't listen to me on either account.

Also, I think maybe next month I can afford the wincustomize browser. Am I understanding this correctly.... I can apply skins directly from the net and not keep them on my harddrive? (I am real short of memory..... and so is my computer!)

Thanks much

Probably WB 3.4 installed some of the files in the same place as the WB 3.3 files, and when you deleted 3.3 it wiped them too. Just uninstall any copies of WB you have, reboot, and install 3.4 and it should be OK.

No, unfortunately not. WB still needs the skins stored on the machine locally (after all, what if you get disconnected?) - the only way not to have the skins there would be to have WB installed on a network drive, which would be a bad idea for performance reasons (and again, the network could go down, and that could be bad if WB was skinning at the time . . .)

OK... I understand now. Thanks a lot!

Um... for future upgrades, I should unload, uninstall, and delete the old one first, THEN reboot, and then install the upgrade?

You don't have to uninstall. Just install right over the old version. It's always a good idea to close the program before installing the new one but even that wouldn't mess up the install, it would just prompt for a restart to finish the installation.

After installing a new version you can delete the old version from OD. If you choose delete and not uninstall then it won't remove anything but the .cab file for the older version.

Oh good. That makes it even easier. Thanks. I get really nervous about these things, and then FOR SURE I have the problems.

Ummmm... any updates on the horizon for Humidor?

Thanks a lot,

I like it even better now that I have it installed all the way!

Thanks for helping me! I'm getting ready to put in more memory, and I'm thinking about a hard drive upgrade too. If I get the stuff, I have to put it in myself (I tried to put a smaller memory chip in awhile ago and shook so hard I kept hitting stuff!)...... so, if you don't hear from me again you know I did something real wrong! Thanks for all your beauty, and humor, and goodness!

(oh, and wish me some luck)

Still haven't heard from Boxxi...

he was trying to install a new hd too. everything went wrong, so he went to Scotland. Should have been back by now.

Wandered a little too close to Loch Ness, I guess.

Thanks for the lucky wish! I found out that I don't have any more places to put memory in. So I have to take out the old memory first. I only have to figure out what to do with whatever it is remembering now.... anyways, I'm off!
