I think they're having problems with bandwidth.

Most high-volume/high traffic sites experience peak limitations from time to time...particularly Graphics/skinning sites which are constantly hit-upon with DLs of wallpapers, etc which can be quite 'large'.
Collectively, al the skin sites combined have a huge amount of traffic compared with Skinning's origins....our popularity and success merely outstrips our capacity...

It's amazing how many times this question is asked. Doesn't anyone read the threads. You would find that question answered many time over.

I heard it was a bandwidth problem. I think it is only ging to get worst as more poeple find out about this site. Maybe Stardock can find another sponcer to help paying for banwidth???

It's just the wallpaper section.

Oh, well hell, lemme run over there and rip...uh, download a bunch right now, so my handy-dandy wallpaper rotater can change all 786 of them every minute on the minute!

I know this has probably come up a million times in the past, but why do ya'll allow wallpapers on your site? (Just out of curiosity, since they aren't really skins, per-se(I think I Jafo'ed that one too )). What about the possibility of a sister site devoted to wallpapers, which could be governed differently as far as meemberships and payments, etc.

Just a thought. Frog...you guys are doing GREAT! Feel free to ignore me. Just passing along some free-floating (gas) ideas

...but why do ya'll allow wallpapers on your site?

Many skins tend to include a wallpaper to complete the look. So to help support that a wallpaper section was born. However the wallpaper section has evolved past our original concept. It no longer is there to just support the skins it has grown into its own entity as the wallpapers that have been submitted are of some of the best on the net.

Yeah, that happened on skinz.org too, yet they seemed to just deal with it. I was just wondering. I guess it makes sense to have something directly linked so if you grab a skin for an app from one author, you can browse the rest of their work for a relating wallpaper, and get an overall theme going, assuming there is no place where a completed theme could be housed already, which might negate the need for a separate wallpaper section for stand-alone wallpapers. But like I said, I was just trying to suggest a way to disperse bandwidth. And hey, you are pretty smart for a janitor

...and I apologize if any of that sounded negative. Definitely not intended!

Skinz.org dealt with it? They had to shut down because they couldn't afford to deal with it.

Well...that's not what was going on right before I left.

Well, kinda, but there seemed to be some major issues with payments to site owner(s) being well behind and when the owner(s) of some sites decided to remove them, the host reinstated the site(s) from backups on their servers, claiming something about it being their property or something. This was over a year ago, and I haven't seen Shoggot here, so don't quote me on anything. This is just what I recall from right before I left. It got pretty unstable there for a bit.

boy you guys don't read http://teknidermy.com/news/ do ya!
all the info about that stuff is somewhere around on that link, just dig when you're bored sometime...

But yes, I recall the wallpaper issues as well, including the fact that a lot of people designed wallpapers that didn't get posted(they were mediated), and complained heartily (numerous four letter words included), as well as simultaneously sucking mass amounts of bandwidth without even a simple "thank you".

and that's pretty much the norm everywhere ain't it? hehe

which is why I was asking about a sister-site devoted to wallpapers, so the app-skinners be in a more stream-lined environment...but it appears that would be inconvenient for linking themed concepts if the wallpaper was on one site, with all similar skins for apps on another, even though the non-wallpaper site would run optimally (from a bandwidth and accessing standpoint)

Sister site at you service:

Umh, maybe I missed something, but who drives this site ? Never was there before I saw the link here...

Sorry all, I guess I am not articulating myself well. Please ignore my entries to this post. I am sure everyone who can do something is doing something to help, and I am not exactly being productive, so I'll zip it

Cool site Bill, but their link for wallpapers does not link to a wallpaper-only site to help split out bandwidth consumption.

i guess that site is run by Stardock to catch users that want to ThemeXP. it is deep-linking to WinCustomize, so actually this site may be responsible for a lot of bandwidth trouble. so Stardock is causing troubles for Wincustomize. strange isn“t it?

if this site is not run by Stardock the situation will be even worse.

and their "Visual Styles" section contains nothing but WindowBlinds skins.

Hmm, I had forwarded the main page to this site until we could resolve the bandwidth issues over there. It doesn't get much traffic presently since it currently directs people to WIncustomize.com unless you link to a subpart of it.
