WindowBlinds Skins over time

Those of you who know me know that I love statistics. And one of the bizarre things I've tracked is the # of new skins made for different things over time.

The one I have tracked the most, not suprisingly, is WindowBlinds skins. How many are made per day.

Here are some results:

1999 avg: 1.7 per day
2000 avg: 0.9 per day
2001 avg: 1.3 per day
2002 avg: 2.1 per day (so far)*

*Note: GUI Olympics impacted this some so let me break it down further:

2002: January - Feb: 1.5 per day
2002: April - May: 1.6 per day
2002: June: 1.3 per day

Now these stats don't take into account all the skins that get rejected. The numbers in 1999 would have been lower by today's standards due to many of them would have been rejected.

This seems to reflect the poll on skinning being on the rise

I've noticed that the wallpapers have seemed to be gaining in popularity. They have just about passed the windowblinds.

The rate in which a section gets more stuff is a factor of how hard it is to create something X the number of users using it.

In skins, there's a third factory and that is originality. Technically speaking (for a statistics point of view) WindowBlinds skinning SHOULD be slowing down, not increasing because people tend to make skins for themselves because no one elese has a skin available to them. I don't make skins often because there are plenty out there for me to choose from and there are people so good at skinning that my talent is dwarfed. But I made most of the first two dozen or so WindowBlinds skins (evne though they were terrible).

You can see that with Winamp, the # of new skins has declined per user. Same I'm sure has happened for WindowBlinds too. Just that there are so many new users getting into skinning that it has offset that.

There was a really good skinning program called Chroma a few years back. I always said that if it could just get 200 to 300 decent skins it would be set. But it never got that critical mass.

You can see this with msstyles already. The # of new skins made for it has drastically fallen off. For awhile, it was getting like a dozen new skins PER DAY. Now it falls behind WindowBlinds on some days which is remarkable considering the relatively low number of them available and ease of making them.
