Sick of Software crap!

I am so ticked off. I am just so sick of Microsoft's software being utter garbage. Don't they know how to make a #@$@# exception handler?!?

I was working on my home page for over an hour with MS Front Page. I did a new document and POW, the whole thing crashes losing all of it. Not just grunt work but creative writing stuff that is really hard to just rewrite from scratch.

It really pisses me off that their bread and butter apps are still so buggy that they crash. They don't have an auto-save feature and when you're in the zone, saving is not something you should have to think of doing constantly.

And it's not just Microsoft, the other "big guys" sofware routinely just crashes or screws up. My virus checker interupted my NWN nights game (who was the genius who felt that every time a virus is received in email it needs to abort you out of a game to tell you that you need to quarantine it????). Needless to say, I wasn't able to get back in the game and had to go to a previous save that was a half hour old.

My paint programs are buggy as all hell to. In one, hitting Ctrl-Insert for copy (I never got into the habit of using Ctrl-C) will switch the program into add select mode for no apparent reason. The other one I use just crashes randomly or bogs down after awhile of using it and it's on VERSION 7 for crying out loud (the other is on version 10).

Now I know the software that I work on isn't always perfect either. But it doesn't cost $500 apiece either. For $500 this stuff should be a lot LOT better than it is.

Sorry to vent, so much for my home page getting done today.

Why do you use FrontPage anyway? You should know better.
Seriously, get your hands on Dreamweaver MX, it's pure clean code and doesn't crash. Can handle ASP and PHP too. It's a must for quick and clean HTML. Nothing like Frontcrap. I speak from experience.

As for you anti-virus program, I totally understand.
The other day I was playing a game of soccer, and I was having a beautifull game! I was winning 6-1 with only a few minutes left to the game. The kind of game you wish you could frame and put it on the wall!
Anyway, Norton Internet Security poped up to tell me that somebody wanted to break in. BAM! Crashed my game. Lost. *snifle*

Oh, and for the record, I would NEVER want an auto-save on my HTML editor. Too often I start from a page with a similar layout, make the text changes I need and add the couple of appropriate pictures, then I save the document with a different name. With an autosave feature, there are many times I would have lost my original page. As a matter of fact, it happened a couple of times anyway, when I just control-S without thinking... DOH!

to get around that paxx, if i'm modifying an existing file, the first thing i do is save the template file with a new name and work on the copy

brad's right, standards suck. in modern industry, quantity and timliness is waaay more important than quality. it's such an aggregious insult to the work ethic that made this country a success i'm surprised it's not talked about more.

my grandpa was a carpenter, and a good one. he didn't consider anything finished unless it was done right.

Chain-smoked Camel cigarettes and hammered nails in planks..." - John Prine (there's more but.... )

Listen to paxx Brad, Dreamweaver is the way to go for web stuff. Front Page is a total disaster.

I figured out once what I've spent over the years upgrading my software. I have about $1200 in CorelDraw, $1100 in Photoshop, $800 in Pagemaker, etc... It would be nice if once they'd come out with a new version and offer it free to the loyal customers that have already bought the damn thing over and over. And it would be really nice if the program worked right out of the box...

I am trying not to forget, that we are leaving at the primitive period of the computer-software future, but sometimes is very hard

Nothing to do with software, but do you remember when you bought something and it came with a warranty that you didn't have to pay for. Those days are pretty much gone. That should say something about the lack of craftmanship. Nothing is built to last anymore.

While I'm looking for a permenant web job, I'm just ignoring any places that are looking for someone experienced with FrontPage. It's just a tool for amateurs. Any web developer/designer with any amount of experience or knowledge uses Dreamweaver (or sometimes GoLive in real pro-Adobe companies).

It's well known that FrontPage creates messy, overly bloated HTML, with pages only working correctly in IE if you try to do anything clever.

Listen to Paxx, Brad

I can give you a great example of how good it is. Even ME was able to make my first site (Integration Worx) with it.

If I could, then everybody can make one.

I've tried dream weaver and didn't like it but I'll give it another shot. I already PAID for Front page.

As for 'hating' proggies, I've found the best bet is to be aware of their short-comings and work within them....one way or another...

And what about the command for quit, on the Maciontosh it's cmd+q, win.-alt+f4.

Brad, here is my philosophy. "Why do it yourself when you can pay someone to do it"

Listen to motion and hire Grayhaze.

Don't listen to me, 'cos I was known as the infamous Mr. Code_Everything_in_Notepad at previous jobs.

Come to think of it, software rarely crashes on me. Perhaps you have bad karma?

Interesting, if you know the program crashes or can crash, why you don't take precautionary steps like saving to a helpfile if 'chapters'are finished..
Today my cursorXP crashed..oh bugger..didn't think that program would crash...I have had crashes in DesktopX, and a lot of other stardock progs, but do I swear at stardock...no..I still like them.

I concur with everyones suggestion of using Dreamweaver. You can type nice code and it won't rearrange it in some weird M$ way or add a bunch of Dreamweaver specific stuff like frontpage was always doing to me.

Frogboy,
I'm surprised that you would even suggest that MS use well written exception handlers. They tend to make goofs transparent to the user. MS's policy has always been that all flubs, and 3% of all correct actions, must be punished in the most annoying manner conceivable, and their programmers are endlessly inventive in this regard. I'm going to have to reskin my Bill Gates voodoo doll, as it's no longer recognizable.
