To all Skinners and any one else interested

I've been uploading WinStyle Suites Recently. None of the work is mine of course. I do not have that kind of talent I like showing off whats on my system and i give credit with each upload, but trying to see the issue in a Skinner's point of view, i find myself feeling that i need permission anyway. I am asking Authors for their opinion about people like me uploading suite files.

Thank you in advance

Ahhhh.... I think I saw a thread here somwhere about this... just make sure it has no sexual content (or something that the skinners would really oppose to having their name connected to) and give them credit.

As I said befor somewhere on the message board, I plan on uploading some cool stuff and I didn't make any of it!!! Like this one for examlpe

Hi elvee,
WinStyles are like screenshots, but unlike the screenshots, the people can have them in their computers with all the functionality of the screenshot contents.
As in screenshots, you don't need any permission, it is the same for WinStyles. The credits for the authors are enough!

I think asking the authors first is the correct way to do it.

I kinda have mixed feelings about it. What if the author him/herself is planning on uploading a winstyles theme? Nobody will need or care to download it if someone has already used all of their skins for a suite.

I think it is fine to put these together without contacting the author. Like Adni18 said, it's no different than uploading a screenshot, since the suite only contains links to the skins/themes, but not the actual files. The only thing I would suggest is to be careful when choosing a name. For example, if you're making a WinStyles suite from an existing skin suite, I would not simply use the name of the skin suite you have assembled, in case the original author wants to make a WinStyles suite for it.

There is a difference between a suite and a theme.

A Theme contains the actual skin files them selves. This should only be done by the author.

However, a suite is essentially links to the skins. So the original author will always have their name attached to their skins. My suggestion is that if you are going to create a suite that only contains skins by a single author then don't do it. Leave it up to the author to do it or write to the author and ask permission. The suite is intended more for creating a general theme from skins from more than one author. So lets say I wanted to create a them by using a WB Skin by Koasati, a Logon by MikeB, a DesktopX theme by BoXXi and a Wallpaper by Nuvem, then you would create a Suite. Its not necessary to get permission from the authors. You can ask of out common curtesy but its not necessary.

This thread sort of parallel's FrogBoy's thread.

I agree with T-Man. If its a particular theme (say Logika as an example) I'd rather have an official Pixtudio one, or if its an old theme that the other may never get around to doing, ask them permission. It'll just cut back on the confusion. Or use a different name as T-Man suggests, such as "T-Man Logika Desktop".

The real strength in suites is to assemble something composed of various heterogenous bits rather than a SUIT of a particular theme
(say IMHO, this accomplishes the following:

1. Presents to folks interesting desktop combinations to that otherwise maybe not be obvious ("Hey gang doesn't X's Y skin look nice with A's B wallpaper?")

2.Provides non-skinners/enthusiasts another way in which to participate in the community by being creative and try to share something of themselves with the community.

3. Hopefully, if Winstyles gets more mainstream within this community/site, it will help alleviate the inevitable deluge of emails you get asking you for the links or files themselves that compose the cool screenshot you just uploaded.

Ugg. So much for cutting and pasting within my post. Looks like a nightmare. I think from now on I should just email 'em to Jafo. he can clean 'em up and post 'em for me.

phrankenstien....most skinner use Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, or The Gimp. Photoimpact is good, but doesn't support layers, and layers is a "good thing".

wondows blonds............ (not laughing at you..........laughing with you)

Layers? Ogre's are like onions. And onions have layers. (sorry, my kids watched Shrek way too many times and its rubbing off on me)

/me notices the subtle redefinition of "suite", from a set of matching skins (mostly by the same author) to a random set of skins bundled as links in a file

Crae, I always thought they should be referred to as Franken-themes. Maybe with a .franken extenstion.

Thank you everyone for your input

When i started uploading Suites, i focused on one particular theme, but now i want to put skins together and see what fits. I didn't want to upload anything new because it's not my place to to do so.

Again Thanks.

Chris...if English is your first language, I'll get all agro and testy and say 'do it yourself, you lazy mongrel'....I only 'do it' for the 'Englishly-challenged'....

Jafo, English is indeed my first language. It's also my optional language . So techincally I could fall into that challenged category.

The problem is I tend to think in images and the rush to translate it all to text often results in a flurry of disjointed phrases. "Food good. Fire bad. Me kill Mastadon..."

Siute??? Theme???? I thought a siute was somethng the original author does but a theme is something that goes together from a mix of authors. Use screenshots for example, a theme like...... NYC Traffic, would be a collection of designs to create a theme. Universal Metal is a siute because all of it is designed specific style (whether many or one author).

See this is why I think there is a need for a national standard for GUI design!!!
