XP Question from yet another newbie

Ok so why does my c:\ drive icon in the Windows Explorer appear as a default icon instead of a drive icon? It has always been that way since installing XP Pro. I've tried using Icon Packager to replace all the icons and it still shows a default icon instead of a drive icon. Any ideas? Thanks for your comments.

It should appear as a drive in the My Computer window. If it's a shortcut you made to the drive it will show as a folder. In the explorer tree it should show as a drive (I think, I'm on a win2k box right now, I'll check XP's tree view later).

yep... on XP it should also be a drive icon. Is your C drive removable?

Nope not a removable drive. Every other drive has the appropriate icon, whether is be floppy, CDROM, DVD, or Zip. It's just the hard drive shows the default icon instead of a drive icon. And by default icon I mean the little page with a turned down upper right ear that shows a "window" in the middle with three colored dots. It looks as if an icon has been set then deleted and it just defaults to this icon.

Thanks!

Strange! I would try installing Microangelo or something and using that to change the icon to a drive icon (contained within the shell32.dll file in C:\Windows\System32 in a standard WinXP installation). If this doesn't work, there's something wrong. Also, try flushing the icon cache.

Has the icon always been like that or can you trace it back to when you installed or uninstlalled something or made some adjustment?

I have an idea... look for a file in your root directory of c:\ it should be called AUTOPLAY.INF if you have that file there, it could be your problem... if you've ever copied files from a cd or anything you may have dragged it... and it would cause that... just thinking..
