Are there any programs that can do this?

Are there any programs out there that can make the background of Explorer transparent?

WindowBlinds can do this, though IIRC it never looked very well. For instance, it would be nice if you could specify it to be partially transparent such that it looked a little bit darker or lighter than the underlying desktop wallpaper. Eterm, or whatever its called, on Linux did this really well.

And get a real nickname and we'll answer you.

/me doesn't like people who enter invisible characters as their nickname.

Here's the instructions (taken from the readme file in SETI green) for WB including where to get Trans Tool:

To make Explorer window backgrounds transparent:
In the Windowblinds configuration window on the "settings" tab click
on "advanced" and put a check in the box "Make Explorer backgrounds
semi-transparent". You also need to set your folder options to "use
Windows classic folders" from the folder options dialog. ("Tools/Folder
Options" on an explorer window's menu.)
For more color options (the default is cyan) download "TransTool"
from the tools page at http://go.to/WBStuff

Talking about transparency.....I still have a very cool transparent notepad called "CrankPad" on my computer. Anyone remember this great little app? I wish it had been developed further, so that I could use custom colors instead of just the default ones.
Does anyone remember who made this app?

Thanks to SkinBrowser, I can see that our ghost is actually called Citizen <SYNTHETIC> . Our browsers are apparently seeing this as an HTML tag and hiding it from us.

BoXXi, Crank had a page up until xoom/nbci stopped hosting, couple of months back (?). He doesn't think much of his apps these days, was wondering if there was any need even, then stopped responding... pity, an 2k/xp version would have been nice.

Thanks for the info Plastic. Can't you convince him to develop his stuff further?, I know you have some influence with developers. Maybe Teknidermy could host his apps?, don't they have that "orphan apps" section?

Citizen, that's because this site strips out tags, so your nick being within tag markers is not showing. Please create a new account, but leave out the greater than and lower than signs.
