Fences 2.0 is currently in BETA and you're invited to try it!

Fences is a program that helps you organize your desktop. Place icons into moveable groups called “fences” and hide icons when they are not in use.

FEATURES YOU ALREADY LOVE

Fence off Your Desktop

Create shaded areas called “fences” on your desktop in which you can place and organize icons.

Automatically Arrange Your Desktop

Define rules for where your icons are placed and how they are arranged. When a new icon gets added, from an installer for instance, it will be automatically added to your preferred fence.

Keep Your Desktop Clean

Double-click blank space on your desktop and all of your icons will fade out. Double-click again and they will return.

NEW FEATURES

Make Your Desktop a Portal to Your Files

Expose folders containing documents or pictures onto your desktop in fenced areas making them easy to access.

Multiple Desktop Pages

You can now have multiple pages of fences on your desktop. To flip a page, just take your mouse cursor to the edge of your screen and click and drag a new page of fences onto your desktop.

Customize Appearance

Fences 2.0 BETA brings additional customization options for controlling per fences views, custom scroll bars and labels.

The folder Portal option is incredible. I now have about 6 pages of folders for my skinning materials. I was thinking about how awsome it would be to be able to use the mouse wheel to scroll through the pages, kinda like the old Vista Desktop function. Swipping with the mouse pointer is o.k even though it can be a bit tedious if you have lots of pages as I do, So I think a mouse wheel scroll through would be outrageously awsome and so much faster.  --Ace --

UPDATE  : Thanks to RND ( Jim ) I learned you can do ALT + mousewheel and do the windows flip through ...AWSOME !! \o/

Awesome additions. :-) What I woild like to see is list view in 'normal' shortcut fences also.

This is super, so far... love that Portal feature.  :congrat:

It would be so cool to be able to set a shortcut to point to a fence.    :pout:

Improvements are moving in the right direction. The snapping control panel is a good feature.

However, when in icon grid mode, the snap isn't quite in the right position; the tops of icons are visible at the bottom of the fence. This is visually distracting. This may be on purpose as a visual indicator of more content, but it detracts from the clean/uncluttered appearance I seek.

When in "free" size mode, I miss the relative snapping when placing a fence adjacent to an already-sized fence. In the previous version, the second fence would snap to the same height, when placed beside a fence, or the same width, when placed above or below a fence. This made sizing exremely consistent, and lining up the icons much easier.

Are there any plans to allow more options with the fence label? It would be nice to have more control over the font size and justification, as well as the background color for the titlebar itself.

Lastly, as a user in a (semi)controlled business environment using XP, I was disappointed to see that the two coolest features, portals and pages, are for Windows 7 or later only...Couldn't that be more explicit on the features page?

If you resize slowly the fence will snap. If the mouse is moving fast . . it won't.

More than this?

Good idea.

Thanks for the reply...

Moving cursor VERY slowly still doesn't "snap"...

The "Adjust color and appearance" dialog in my install doesn't have the label options...only the "Adjust label text color..." and "Adjust icon transparency and Fence fading..." - Must also be OS dependent feature???

What OS are you using?

There seems to be a slight conflict between Fences 2 and WindowBlinds 7.  If you have an Explorer background texture selected in WB, the control panel for Fences 2 tries to use it but there's some sort of problem because the text and the controls are faded out and difficult to use.  Changed Explorer background texture to default i.e. none, and the problem goes away.

Another thing to look into... when you use the 'Hide Details Header' option, it may not persist across reboot.  The box is checked, but just now there I had to uncheck and recheck to get it to work.

@ MarvinKosh. You may want to post in the Fences 2 Beta Bug Report thread. That explorer background issue has been noted, but one more report of it won't hurt. ;)

Which option is this?  Can you post a  screenshot of the config?

Hey Zubaz, I posted the screenshot over in the beta bug report thread.

I am running XP SP 3. This is a work machine, so I can't update the OS...

you will not have all the features then.
