alpha-blending

i think i may finally have worked out what all the fuss is about alpha blending, but i would be interested in knowing if i am correct or not.

i have recently downloaded the Logika skin for coolplayer, and am noticing that the curved edges are "steppy", on the scale of pixels by the looks of it.

so, if the edges were instead alpha blended, would they seemlesly blend into the "background"?

/me considers it ironic that i have been watching this term thrown around for well over a year without actually really working out why

Correct. hehehe!
Even more, an application that would use alpha blending could even have semi transparent parts where you could see your desktop through for example. But as far as I know, no application use alpha blending for windows. Alpha blending on XP is rather new and is for now only applicable to icons (where they indeed don't have a jagged edge and can also be semi-transparent.)

/me goes for irony++
i have been running windows fx on my win2k box at home for ages to achieve semi-transparent menus.
i did try making ALL my windows semi-transparent once, but since it then took me 3 minutes to move my cursor across the machine with 5 stacked windows, i decided to leave that until i got a more powerful machine.

/me achieves irony += 2
i spent part of the weekend playing with cursor xp, and making my windows cursors translucent, which is well cool.

and though all of this, i still hadnt got my head round the "window edge" uses of alpha-blending, thinking of translucent windows as a different effect.

/me thinks i will just give up now, and go back to bed

Must you?

Yeah, alpha-blending is nice. I'd just like to see it in WB borders. That would be cool with a big K (like that breakfast cereal people worship).
