What are computers?

Tonight some computer friends and i were chatting and started philosophizing about what computers are. Just appliances? Doorways to other worlds? What? Since we're all here to make our computers work better or at very very least differently we must see them as something more than just tools to do a job. Any thoughts?

I see them as an external extension of a persons mind, emotions, and perception. In the mundane world they are just tools, something that is used but never appreciated, but then there are those that look deep within themselves and realize that the item beneath their fingures is as much a part of them as a leg or arm. Just as a painter uses a brush as an extension of himself to expand reality onto a canvas, we flow our creative energy thru the electronic and magnetic flow of the circuitry set before us. So in short for some it is jsut a tool or a paperwieght, and for others it is a vital to their lives as any part of their body or mind.

Mine is a strange beige box that ceases to function at will [but not mine]....

Just a big pile of NAND-switches. Actually, I tend to think of my screen as the computer, not the noisy box next/below it.

Well, actually, it's really just a machine.

It's a machine, and sometimes it allows us to create wonderful things. I love the fact that I'm able to be in contact with people I might never have met otherwise. But at the end of the day, they're TOOLS, created by us, subservient to us. The day I call my computer an extension of myself is the day I give it away No offense intended towards Mobius.

its really just a big calculator.
and my computer science teacher from highschool called them "superfast idiots" or something to that effect. they can calculate things very fast, but they do only what you tell them to do, there is no guessing or questioning of what you tell it to do.

It is the natural growth of man's creation and love of the written word-language, language that can now create images. Written Language being the only tool that has elevated man above all other animals.

Sorry, give blood today.

Well think about it, what is the true difference between a man painting on a cave wall and drawing with a computer, nothing! And what is a program but yet another language man has created.

OK I'll stop.

they are warm and cuddly and friendly
they give shape and form to my existance, provide a bridge from one world to another, and as a bonus, the table leg (the table for the computer) stops my pile of chocolate bars from falling over all the time

a transindental gateway to an alternate view of reality, where things are more distorted and warped the the view outside my window. Like a looking glass into the minds of all those that create data threads

For me, computers are a doorway to a wider world. The ultimate communications device, magazine, and interactive entertainment unit.

At home I have my laptop equipped with wireless ethernet so I can be on the internet from anywhere which is really handy.
