Having a wierd issue with Descscapes locking up.

I LOVE Deskscapes but something is making it lockup. I have narrowed it down to one of 2 things. First, and both of these are with WindowBlinds, IconPackager and CursorFX Pro installed, If I click on, in the settings, current desktop (the first one to the right of random) and choose a style like fit, stretch etc.. other than Auto, it locks up within a minute or about the time it should change desktops.

OR, and I usually have this uninstalled, when I install Windows Gadgets from add / remove Windows components.

Are there any reasons why these would lock Deskscapes up to the point where I have to push the reset button?

I am doing a clean restore tomorrow so I hope that fixes it but I was hoping someone mught be aware of somekind of issue.

Thanks!

I fixed a very similar problem on XP with ATI immediately after updating to the current Deskscapes version by updating the ATI drivers.  My Deskscapes wasn't actually hanging (no excessive cpu usage and Deskscapes remained responsive), the background would just go black at the point it should have been refreshed.

Are you referring to the rotating wallpaper feature of a Windows7 theme and not a DeskScape?

If so, then yes, changing those setting in DS rather than in Personalize  will stop the walls from changing and  "Next desktop background" will not be visible in the right-click menu on your desktop. This is because DS has set the wallpaper and only uses one of them, not a slide show. So, DeskScapes is not locking up. If you want the walls to rotate again, open Personalize and reapply the Windows theme. The Windowblind will not get changed and you will get the slideshow back.

A bigger issue for me is that the newest DX (3.96) also does this to my wallpaper when loading or unloading a DXtheme and I have to open Personalize to reset it. I never use DX to apply a wall so I fail to understand why this version is mishandling a job it isn't supposed to do.

Will do Doc. I recently updated from 3.5 and noticed it while testing DX for Jim. I shall link to this thread.

Because he can? }:)

You saved me a link. Not to hijack the thread but can you look into that please? I understand DS setting the wall, but IIRC, the old version of DX did not change my fill-fit-auto settings when running a slideshow or stop it from running.

I need to add that it does this mainly on unloading DX. When you first load a theme, no change is made. It also appears to restart explorer on exit, as the taskbar disappears.

So is this just a point where DeskScape is trying to change wallpapers?

DeskScapes makes an image of the current wallpaper and keeps it in C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Stardock. This is the image that gets reapplied, not the slideshow or group of walls.

Just don't use DS to resize your wallpaper, use Personalize instead.

The part about hitting the reset button could use more explaination. Is the whole PC locking up, the desktop, DS Config, or what?

HI,

I "think" I found the problem, and sorry but there is some info I did not include. Deskscapes would lock up primarily when I ran Acronis True Image Home and I had True Image's affinity set to above normal. I ALSO had Perfect Disc's affinity set to above normal and both run in the background. Since I changed everything back to normal settings my system is running smooth again.

What a goof I can be.... sorry guys, and gals but thanks for the help.

See my new post, I have a question.

Yes. That seems to be a recurrent theme, doesn't it?
