Steam Hacked

Just in case you didn't hear it already, Steam was hacked on 11/6 and Valve made a official announcement about it on 11/10.

It appears that a database containing information including user names, passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and credit card information was accessed.

I change my password to something I can't remember, just to be safe. Although, that Steam guard thing is quite useful on it's own. I'm probably more safe than most, since I never actually used a credit card to buy all my games.

This is probably just me seeing conspiracies everywhere again, but why hasn't there been any serious attempt to break into Xbox Live?

Probably since Microsoft learned their lesson and hide behind a Linux Firewall, after the Storm Worm trashed them some years ago.

There probably has been.  I imagine MS secures their data quite well, considering they also use Passport and MS Billing for EVERYTHING...not just XBL.

I don't do games. Have nothing in the 'cloud' nor anything online anywhere. So screw the hackers where the sun don't shine. HA!

As I wrote quite some time back, the overriding issue regarding the cloud is security.

However, while account info was stolen, it was encrypted - credit info was hashed and salted... so it's unclear how it can be decrypted at all without the algorithm.

Still, it's wise to change your password if you have an account there.

who says xbox live wasn't hacked? tom chick was just bitching about it a while back.. apparently it's very common.

Your data, privacy, etc. is never completely safe no matter if it's online or offline. At least they were fairly quick in notifying people and did a forced reset.
