how's the AI?

I've often wanted to give Sins of a Solar Empire a go, it's looks complex and fun, and i'm a big fan of 4x strategy games.

But i have a question i think the community can answer for me before i decide to purchase or not, it's a major selling point for me however weird it may be:

How would you all rate the AI in this game (post 1.31) compared to other strategy games? Is it capable? does it "cheat"? is it Balanced? and so on. I prefer to be playing against an AI which isn't all too "mechanical" in it's playstyle if you know what i mean, hopefully with a certain level of unpredictability. I know no AI code is perfect, i've just read so many conflicting opinions from reviews concerning this game, that i just had to ask in here. I'd rate you all the experts, after all.

You are right. It is not perfect. Higher levels do cheat with extra money at hard and unfair then faster research and build at cruel and vicious. The one main issue with the AI is its inability to handle starbases properly. Overall it is a good AI build (IMHO) with this one exception. Capital ship building is not that great either but that is not game breaking.

For most players the AI is sufficiently challenging. It won't win any awards, and as mentioned one of the big things it is terrible at is attacking extremely well fortified positions, but it is decent to competent in most everything else. The AI does cheat on hard and above, but its not excessive except at the "cruel" and "vicious" AI levels, which were really only made for those that want a ridiculously hard AI.

The AI being unable-to-handle-starbases is the biggest problem. To make things more balanced, I usually try to win games against the AI without building starbases which'll be attacked.

The AI is also somewhat inefficient at moving its fleet (it's hard for it to manage logistics well), but once its fleet arrives in the same gravity well as an enemy fleet, the auto-attacking (on both sides) is pretty good.

Except for the starbase problem, it's still a pretty good AI overall.

But if you're interested in a game with even more strategic depth, consider coming online once you've got the hang of it. Humans are much more interesting! (More difficult, yes, but more interesting)
